Handmade ceramic bowls will find some homemade soup and new homes this weekend.

The Churchill County Library hosts the second annual “Empty Bowls” soup buffet on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

For a donation of nonperishable food, a hygiene item or cash, participants choose a bowl to keep after they use it to fill up with some hot soup and a side of bread. Donations are also accepted at the library ahead of the event during regular business hours to reserve a particular favorite bowl.

A grassroots movement by artists around the world, “Empty Bowls” raises money for food-related charities. The bowl serves as a reminder of those in the community who face the challenges of hunger on a daily basis.

This local event is sponsored by art instructor Jaime Shafer’s Churchill County High School ceramics students who made and donated the bowls, the Fallon Chamber of Commerce Karma Box project and the Churchill Library Association.

Last year, 150 bowls of soup were ladled out by raising $3,000 and filling three trucks with food for the Karma Box at 290 W. Williams Ave. The box is regularly stocked with donations of non-perishable food, first aid items and toiletries for anyone to take and use.

Cash donations will help the Churchill Library Association to fund local library programming.

Volunteers are needed to help make soup and bread.
