About 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon the surging millions began to press forward toward the site of the Rosser Buildings, drawn thither by our announcement yesterday of laying the corner stone of that structure. Among those in attendance was Henry Monk, Esq., the famous stage driver, Jerome Thornington, Esq., formerly sheriff of Lyon County, The Famed Colonel Rosser, Colonel Abe Curry and ourself. There was no particular necessity for any extra scallops in line of formalities, and none were observed. Placed in the box was an emery bag representing a woman’s leg and gaiter, a dime, a silver half dollar a certificate of membership of the Ancient Order of Egyptian Monks, and a copy of the Carson Daily Appeal. (There were many more items too numerous to list here)

Jim Meder came into town yesterday and reported that an Indian who is well known hereabout as “Schemerhorn” attempted to rob a Mexican while crossing the twelve-mile desert, beyond Cradlebaugh’s old place in Douglas County last Monday and got badly wounded for his felonious venture. The story is to the effect that the Indian crept upon him and demanded his money and horse, in true Claude Duval style, but the villain Caballero threw himself upon the dastardly foe.

While the Appeal is not averse to a carnival for Carson City next July there are a few matters which should be taken into consideration before the carnival question is agitated too much. President Roosevelt is to visit this city on the 19th of May – just one month from today.

Very sultry weather yesterday, just the kind to start out the trusting budges of expectation and cause to circulate in joyful carelessness the juices of a tender and innocent growth, tempting the intrusion of the withering winds of disappointment and the cruel frosts of adversity. Thus, it is the sweet mead of hope is freckled over with the dingy cast of apprehension and we chew the bitter cud of trouble.

Doc Benton returned yesterday from his trip to Salt Lake, where he has been attending the spring session of the Mormon conference. He looks as if he had been through the Endowment House.

The Reno Journal of Sunday contained a rather lively article. It looks as if the man who was running the Linotype got hot at the machine and introduced a few lines of Washoe profanity to express his feelings. These lines were left in the article and gave it a decidedly earnest appearance. We don’t mind a little profanity occasionally in print, but we don’t expect to see it in the Sunday edition of any of our exchanges.
