Keno. This is the furor sport in Carson now. Three large rooms are filled with its devotees nightly at the Magnolia, Winston’s Exchange, and at Lewis & Forington’s to say nothing of Fortune’s wheel that revolves to the exclusion of “boys under 17.”

Little giant on the way. A dispatch was received here, yesterday, from the Shelby Manufacturing Company to sheriff Swift, dated Aug. 1, 1873, which reads as follows: “Engine and hose left here last Saturday.” The sheriff and Gus Lewis called in to hand us this dispatch and to request to say to subscribers that they will be around to-day for the money. Be prepared, therefore, to shell out. The little giant comes by slow freight and may be shifted several times.

Owing to the scarcity of water here, fish commissioner Parker has been unable to have any fish hatched this summer.

The latest reports from the scene of the Folsom prison break seems to point to the fact that the convicts are headed for the hell hole country, which is one of the wildest countries in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Once they reach this country all the militia in California would find it difficult to drive the desperate men out.

Carson City’s telephone system is past the $397,000 mark, representing an investment of better than double the amount in 1945. Carson City residents now post more than 4,920 calls per day.

Three “ghostbusters” came to the rescue and slimed the supernatural at a local saloon in Virginia City, where ghost sightings have been reported in recent weeks. Ed Owens, Rob Doyle and Mike Genentech performed the tongue-in-cheek exorcism Saturday at the Old Washoe Club Saloon.

150 Years Ago

Gone up the river. Two teams from David & Winnies, and three from Doc. Benton’s went off yesterday morning at 7 o’clock, with wood choppers piled up and hanging over the wagons to the number of fifty-five. They are sent up to young’s ranch, below Markleeville several miles, to ‘unhang’ the lately stranded drive of wood of which 20,000 cords remain onshore along the rivers and off in the sloughs. The plan is to work from the rear, that is, from the beginning of the stoppage with the main force, while few men are detached and stationed along the line of the river to keep the current clear.

The graduating class of ‘83 have cards of invitation out for a party which they give at the Central School Building this evening.

Yesterday the bloodhounds at the Nevada State Prison were transported to Reno. This evening officers Chas Ferrell of Reno leaves with the hounds for Folsom where they will be given a scent of the fugitives. After the party has reached Placerville, the hounds will be taken to the Grand Victor Mine, the scene of the last fighting between the posse and the prisoners.

It’s time to start that beard. That’s what the Nevada Day committee said today as it urged all Carson men to enter the contest on Nevada Day, Oct. 31.

In a recent Carson City survey asking people about the level of service they received from the sheriff’s department, 93.8 percent said they approved of the department’s handling of cases they were involved in, sheriff Paul McGrath said Friday.
