Reading may be adventure, romance, action, politics or military, but for the patrons of the Churchill County Library, “Books, Bites and Beverages: A Library Adventure” on Friday night means supporting the annual fundraiser “Books, Bites and Beverages: A Library Adventure.”
Every year the Churchill Library Association, the fundraising arm of the library presents a fundraiser where community members may sample different types of wine, nibble on hors d'oeuvre, mingle, sip on beer or soft drinks and bid on baskets that contain an array of goodies.
This year’s Books, Bites and Beverages, the library’s main fundraiser, begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased in advance at the library or at the door. The featured books and authors are “On the Trail of the Jackelope” by Michael P. Branch; “One Upon a Tom,” by Oliver Dorkshire; “Brave Hearted” by Katie Hickman; “It Starts with Us” by Colleen Hoover; “Fresh Waters for Flowers” by Valerie Perrin; “Dragons Love Tacos,” by Adam Rubon; and “Wine Tome,” by Barbara Scott-Goodman.
“(Michael Branch) is a fascinating author who’s coming back,” said Zip Upham, a member of the CLA.
Upham said raffle baskets will accompany each literary-themed table. Raffle tickets are $5 each or six for $25. He said wine pull tickets are separate from the admission and are $25 each. Guests select a bottle of wine, which could either be red or white, wrapped in a brown paper bag. Upham said recipients don’t know what type of wine they are receiving for their tickets.
Upham and Jo Petteruti, another member of the CLA, recently spoke at the Fallon Rotary Club and said the library association selects the board of directors while the county provides the major funding. They said the CLA was formerly known as Friends of the Library.
“The CLA is a separate board and runs as a fundraising arm,” Upham explained. “The funds raised go to different programs the program has.”
Each year, the CLA also recognizes library volunteers and some of the funded programs such as “Books for Babies” that gives parents a book to read to their young children, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities and the summer reading program.
“The CLA underwrites a lot of the cost,” Upham said. “Phenomenal programs engage both children and … keeps people engaged in reading. Annual funding also procures a volunteer appreciation event.”
Upham said the CLA supports volunteers who assist the librarian with the re-shelving of books and helping patrons.
The library is located at 553 S. Maine St., and the telephone number is 775-423-7581.
