Churchill County School District will welcome staff and students to the first day of school on Monday, but before the classrooms are buzzing with excitement, a Churchill County High School Back-to-School kickoff event is Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Rafter 3C Arena.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and organizers strongly recommend students and parents arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the program beginning.

Career, college, military and community members will be represented in more than 60 booths throughout the arena. A free barbecue, CCHS student schedule pickup and a teachers and staff meet-and-greet are planned for the evening.

Sue Segura, the school district’s coordinator of Work Based Learning, discussed the plans for Back-to-School night at last week’s Churchill Entrepreneurial Development Association meeting. Not only will students be greeted by their teachers and other staff members from CCHS, but they will also meet representatives from different businesses and educational institutions. Segura said the booths will be set up in the arena, and most representatives are either former CCHS graduates or employees. She is planning for at least 700 people to attend the first community Back-to-School night.

Segura said Fallon Ford Toyota will bring a truck and A&K Earth Movers has been requested to bring one of their "big yellow" vehicles. Segura said she’s enthusiastic about showing students, especially seniors, the opportunities that await them.

Segura added the grandparents will welcome the students and their parents to Back-to-School Night and then tell them when they graduated and what they have done with their lives. Once inside, the students and their parents will see tables set up with information to help them plan for their future.

In addition to the welcome, Segura said the Churchill County Naval Junior ROTC will post the colors, and the Greenwave fight song will be played.

“We’re celebrating our community,” Segura said, adding State Sen. Robin Titus will attend.

Segura said the county commissioners and members of the Fallon City Council will be cooking and serving meals.
