One of the region’s biggest youth sports events returns to the Lahontan Valley on Saturday.
Teams from Reed, North Valleys, McQueen, Lassen, Hug, Damonte Ranch and Fallon converge for the Sierra Youth Football League Experience at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex to scrimmage and record weights one week before the regular season begins.
Fallon Youth Football League will host the SYFL Experience scrimmage and weigh-in and check-in event where more than 7,000 players, coaches and families will journey to Fallon.
Gates open and weigh-ins begin at 6:30 a.m. followed by scrimmages starting at 8:30 a.m. There is a $5 admission fee for non-players and coaches. Children ages 3-12 are $3.
Families and spectators are encouraged to arrive early for the event due to high traffic volume. Entrance and parking to the all-day event are off Sheckler Cutoff, south of the high school campus. General parking is available in the high school parking lot and overflow parking is located on Merton Drive.
Spectators are allowed to bring canopies, folding chairs, blankets, wagons and strollers. Items not allowed include pets, ice chests, coolers, outside food, cigarettes (including e-cigarettes) and alcohol.
Vendors will be available during the day, including the Fallon Quarterback Club, which is one of the primary food vendors. Local athletics clubs, like the high school’s sports programs, will also be at the Experience.
The regular season begins Aug. 19 and ends with the championship games by early November. All SYFL games are played on Saturdays on high school fields. The SYFL cheerleading competition is held in November.
FYFL is coming off another successful season after the Greenwave won the JV and Collegiate football, and Freshman cheer championships.
The Collegiate team became FYFL’s second group of players to win a championship every season. The first to accomplish the feat was the 2016 Fallon senior class that won the high school state championship. This year’s group enters the high school program as freshmen.
Fallon’s cheer team won the Freshman division over Damonte Ranch, while Fallon took second in the Mavericks and fourth in the Bandits.
