150 Years Ago

Washoe case of water right. The courthouse was crowded yesterday with persons interested in this case of the United Ranch Men of Washoe Valley against the Marlette Flume Company. A perfect jam of farmers were in attendance earnest watching the progress of the suit and the bruising of flies.

The Esmeralda Herald has suspended publication, but it went down with colors flying and didn’t owe a dollar to anybody. Mr. Glen, its proprietor, will be in the field again before long and running another paper that is a credit to the craft.

120 Years Ago

A lively convict. Roberts, the Folsom convict who was captured Wednesday in California, appears to be about the liveliest traveler that has visited this end of the earth since the flood. The day before he was reported at Tallac, where he scared several of the Israelites out of a score of karats of diamonds. The same afternoon he took lunch at a farmhouse near Placerville and the same evening officer Ferrel had him nearly tracked down near Shingle Springs. Not being content with covering this distance, a peace officer in Carson located him near the Zimmer Ranch, while an hour after the constabulary of Gardnerville had a bird’s eye view of the wonder. Sigh all of this journey, it is not wonder that he had to give away to fatigue.

Carson City is no longer the smallest state capital in the United States. Bob Dill, executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, said today that according to an unofficial tabulation, Carson City can no longer say it’s the smallest capital in the United States. Carson City has 10,500 residents while Juneau, Alaska has 7,500.

Sky watchers will be treated to an especially good view of a recurring sky event —the annual Perseid Meteor Shower this Friday and Saturday.

The voice from the neighborhood. The ordinance passed by the county commissioners, compelling property holders to clear the alleys of all the rubbish and filth accumulated for years, is a very excellent one and should be rigidly enforced, such removal tends greatly to the health of our town. At the same time our excellent city fathers should set a good example and cause all the debris left in the alley near the courthouse to be carted away.

Captain Todman has purchased the condemned steamer “Governor Stanford” for $2,000 and will convert her into a tow boat.

It has been decided that Caliente is to be the end of a division. Sidetracks are being surveyed, the location for the roundhouse selected, water-tanks erected, and the many things necessary at the terminus of a division being provided for. Several parties are talking of erecting buildings and staring in business, and it looks as if Caliente would soon be a lively place.

Burglars broke through the roof of the Meyers Hardware store late last night and walked off with 10 or more handguns and some small change, according to police. Burglars also took an unknown amount of ammunition.

Slightly surprised by a 10 percent growth in the student population during the past years, Douglas County School District officials say a study shows the district may be “on the threshold of what may be very dramatic growth.”

Veneration for the law. It was fully understood among the Indians that the ordinance requiring them to be beyond the town limits after nightfall would be enforced; and half pleased and half afraid they had all disappeared yesterday, by evening twilight.

The Niagara is now a regular mail and passenger steamer of Lake Tahoe. It leaves Glenbrook at 7 o’clock in the morning (Sundays excepted) and makes the entire tour of the lake, reaching Glenbrook at 1:30 p.m. and connecting with stages to Carson. It then leaves for Tahoe City connecting with Moody’s state for Truckee. J.T. Todman, commander.

Dr. Lee returned from Gardnerville last evening where he had been called to examine the smallpox patient. The victim is a young man employed near the town. The commissioners have purchased a building for a pest house. Quarantine has been established and every precaution taken for the prevention of a spread of the disease.

Sale of the John L. Savage Construction Company, one of Ormsby County’s largest employers was announced today to Jon Tom Ross, local attorney and Warren “Swede” Swanson, manager for Savage since 1959.

Gaping cracks and bulging walls have Carson City detectives searching for higher ground. Their basement abode in the Sheriff’s Office has been determined “unsafe” and until the ceiling can be reinforced, the deceives are going to have to move.
