Carson City has announced the selection of three finalists for the South Carson Street Roundabout Public Art Project.

“This process is step one in selecting the artist that will design the ‘gateway’ art piece that will be placed in the South Carson Street/South Stewart Street roundabout,” reads a press release from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The artists selected are Karen Yank from New Mexico, Curtis Pittman from Washington and Michael Szabo from California.

“Over 150 applications from artists all around the country were received,” reads the release. “Nine panelists, specialized in the fields of art and construction, were selected to review and score each application. Scores were based on artists’ qualifications, which included their resume and photos of previous projects completed.”

On Aug. 3, the final scores were tallied, and finalists were notified. Finalists will be required to visit Carson City within the next several weeks to learn about the culture and history of Carson City and to “seek inspiration for their design,” according to the press release.

A final proposal from each artist is due by Oct. 30.
