Friday night lights is back this week when Fallon’s football team opens the season at Reed.
The Greenwave, who won the 3A East last year before falling in their first playoff game to Spring Creek, travel to Sparks to face the Raiders, who advanced to the 5A league semifinals last fall before losing to Spanish Springs. Reed ousted Fallon in last year’s opener in Fallon after the Greenwave led the majority of the game.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KKTU 99.5 with Greenwave Hall of Famers Larry Barker and Randy Beeghly on the call.
The freshman and JV teams open their season today at Reed at 3:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. This year is the first time since 2019 that Fallon has fielded a freshman team.
This year’s team returns most of its players and boasts a 20-plus member senior class with talent on both sides of the ball for Brooke Hill, last year’s Coach of the Year in the league.
Among the key returners are first-team all-league selections senior quarterback Bryce Adams, who was named the division’s Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Year, senior lineman and tight end Baylor Sandberg, senior defensive back and quarterback Brady Alves, and junior lineman Trevor Hyde. Sandberg also was named co-Defense MVP.
Also back are all-league standout seniors Ethan Tarner (defensive line), Rolland Grondin (linebacker), Carter Paul (defensive back), Sean Reeder (offensive and defensive line), Rafe Brown (offensive line) and Caden McKnight (linebacker)
After this week’s game against Reed, Fallon will have a bye before returning to action on Sept. 1 when it travels to Galena. The first home game is not until Sept. 8 when South Tahoe visits the Lahontan Valley.
VOLLEYBALL
The only other sport in action this weekend is volleyball for both Fallon and Oasis Academy.
Both schools will compete in the two-day Yerington tournament starting on Friday.
Thirty-two teams ranging from the 5A to the 1A will compete in the Mason Valley tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. and will be played at both the high school and middle school gyms. Teams are divided into four-team pools and Saturday’s schedule will use seeding from Friday’s results.
Fallon will take on Wells at 10 a.m. on Friday followed by McQueen at 3 p.m. and Silver Stage at 5 p.m. Oasis Academy, which now competes in the 2A, opens with Dayton at 10 a.m., then Mammoth at 1 p.m. and ROP at 4 p.m.
