A 26-6 thumping of Calaveras, California on Friday was just what the doctor ordered for Carson High football.
Now 1-1, the Senators this week face one of their toughest challenges of the season in Basic High of Henderson.
Last year, the Wolves beat the Senators, 34-2.
This season, Carson will travel seven hours south to take on a Class 4A powerhouse.
Basic is 0-1 after a 30-22 loss to Silverado in its opener.
Getting on the right track
There were a lot of positive takeaways in the second half of the Senators’ win over Calaveras.
Finding some offensive rhythm was a goal after Carson’s offense was held without a point in its opener.
Kincaid Gill returned at quarterback after being injured in Carson’s opener. He ended the night 6-for-9 with 81 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
He also ran for a 21-yard touchdown in the second half.
The Senators’ defense and special teams also served as a catalyst for the offense.
Jake Weninger returned his second kickoff for a touchdown in as many games. The 5-foot-7 junior gave Carson a 13-6 lead.
Senior Dawson Herbert blocked a punt on the Redhawks next drive early in the third quarter, which allowed Gill to grab his rushing touchdown on a short field.
Ethan Hendee went on to catch the final score on a 34-yard receiving touchdown.
On defense, Carson has 3.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss through its first two games.
JT Heaton leads the way with 14 total tackles this season while Johnathan Alvarado is second on the team with 12.
Junior Kokoa Mitchell has the Senators’ lone interception.
