The Oasis Academy girls basketball team won its opener against enCompass Academy, 34-14, on Dec. 4 in Reno before going 1-1 at a Lake Tahoe weekend tournament.

Against the Explorers, Dahlila Creer led Oasis with 18 points followed by Grace Laca with six. Kaylee Craig, Lakota Casey, Caitlin Oyler, Kayla Greenberg and Hazel Mackedon each scored two points.

Creer also led the team in rebounds with eight, followed by Reese Laca with five and Greenberg with three. Oyler and Craig each had two rebounds. Crag and Mackedon led the team in steals with three, and both Reese and Grace Laca each had two steals.

BIGHORN BOYS

The Oasis Academy boys basketball team overcame a slow start to down enCompass Academy, 40-33, on Dec. 4.

The Explorers raced out to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter in Reno before the Bighorns started to chip away, narrowing the deficit to seven points (20-13) at halftime. Oasis outscored the host, 27-13, in the second half, including a nine-point margin in the final frame.

“We started the game with no intensity and poor shooting, which put us behind at one point by 12 points in the first quarter,” Oasis Academy coach Don Schank said. “The boys didn't let that deficit get them down and they slowly were able to come back by getting more aggressive on defense then outscoring the Explorers in the other three quarters to come out with the victory.”

Schank said that the team continues to shoot below 30 percent, which needs to improve as the Bighorns open league play this weekend. The team had less turnovers on Monday but he said it’s still an area to work on. Oasis Academy converted 13-of-23 from the free throw line and doubled the Explorers in rebounding.

Matthew Bird led the team with 13 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, and he also had nine rebounds and three steals. Fenn Mackedon finished with nine points and 11 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks and three steals. Benton Snow and Caden White each scored six points, White had five rebounds and Austin Booker added three rebounds, three rebounds and three steals.
