Dear reader, I am a sucker for happy-ever-after endings and the story of Boots is truly heartwarming.

For those folks who frequent Liberty Park outside of Fallon I am sure you noticed the hanging trash bag by the road as you pulled in. The purpose of the bag was to contain empty cat food cans.

About three years ago, regular park goers noticed a group of three cats who had taken up residence in the bushes across from the dog park. Dumped by thoughtless humans they would hide when approached. However, Big Orange, a giant ginger, accosted everyone with demands of food and attention.

That was the beginning of a community love affair with the Dog Park cats. It did not take long before people began regularly feeding the cats. It was not just one person but several. We referred to the cats as Big Orange, Socks, and Boots. Amazingly, the cats remained shy but always showed up for dinner.

We mentioned trapping the cats but every attempt ended in disappointment. Therefore, we continued to care for them at a distance. That is until Joanne decided to encourage Big Orange to come closer and allow her to hold him. It took months but eventually Big Orange was seduced into a warm truck, warm heart and loving home.

Unfortunately, Boots and Socks were extremely cautious and the chances of getting them to succumb to handling were slim. Socks eventually accepted help by going with Joanne. Sadly, a trip to the vet for a checkup confirmed that he was ill and it was too late for him.

Boots continued on alone, eating the offered food and stealing off into the bushes and undergrowth to hide. Few folks were able to pet her and Joanne was one of them. Last week Boots allowed her to take her home.

So goes the Christmas miracle for Boots. Merry Christmas to Big Orange, Boots and Joanne!
