The Oasis Academy boys basketball team’s home-opening, Winter Homecoming weekend was ruined by two of the top teams in the Northern 2A.

After going toe-to-toe with Battle Mountain on Friday at the city-county gym, Oasis Academy fell to the Lander County school, 60-48, before a tough 61-17 loss to West Wendover on Saturday.

“It was a tough week for Oasis basketball, but playing against two of the top four teams in our division was a good experience for us,” Bighorns coach Don Schank said. “Battle Mountain was a team I thought we could compete with and did for the first three quarters.”

A Fenn Mackedon 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in the third quarter saw the Bighorns trail by one, 38-37. But the Longhorns outscored the hosts by 11 in the first minute-and-a-half of the fourth quarter, and the Bighorns couldn’t recover.

Mackedon led the team with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Matthew Bird scored 12 points and led the team in steals with four. Trevor Barrenchea, who made his season debut after being sidelined with a shoulder injury, scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Hunter Adams and Austin Booker each scored four points and three assists. Adams also had seven rebounds, and Benton Snow scored three points, grabbed four rebounds and dished three assists.

Saturday’s loss featured a West Wendover team that put on a display with its speed, size and experience, according to Schank.

“Our West Wendover game was very much a learning experience,” Schank said. “I am proud that they never gave up and they played as hard as they could. This game was definitely a learning experience that we needed.”

Mackedon led the team with nine points, Barrenchea added five, Austin Thibodaux had two and Booker finished with one.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Lady Bighorns also had a tough time with Battle Mountain and West Wendover.

Oasis Academy lost to the Longhorns, 64-17, on Friday before falling to the Wolverines on Saturday.

The Bighorns basketball teams traveled to Silver Stage on Wednesday, and the boys team will compete in a holiday tournament in Reno from Wednesday to Saturday. The girls team is off until the first week of January.
