On Christmas morning some friends of Sheriff Swift met together in his office and astonished and gratified him with the present of a gold headed rosewood cane. The principal, if not the sole donors were L. Stearin, constable of this township, and John Newhouse, policeman.

The convict’s Christmas. One who is desirous of sending a joyous Christmas should never think of coming out to the state prison the same day to see the religious exercises there. It will do you more good than harm, yet you would wish all day that you had sent a deputy instead of going yourself. There are some scenes occasionally met with the life which churn up the human and sympathetic side of people, and this is one of them.

Near the graveyard there is a village that is springing up rapidly and every few days there is a house in the course of construction or else complete. It is the Washoe Indian village that is growing, and it is not confined to campodies or tents, but board cabins.

James Warren, alias Fresh, who killed Rattlesnake Dick in Hawthorne several months ago, has been found guilty of murder in the second degree and will receive his sentence on the third of January.

Unlike the scrooge who repented with the spirit of Christmas, Carson City has its own scrooge, a dog poisoner, who apparently will not stop killing the canine population of Carson City. Six dogs have been poisoned so far.

Our boy-carrier has sadly failed of his duties lately. There will be no more of that nonsense if we can avoid it. Meanwhile, until we can get a reliable person to carry the Appeal, Mr. Robinson undertakes to deliver it. The omissions of yesterday morning were numerous and inexcusable — save the fact that the boy got tired and went home before his trek was done.

Chas Harris was arrested yesterday for using vulgar language to Clem Berry, in front of Rail’s store. He was tried before Justice Cary and the jury found him guilty. He will be sentenced today.

Concha Seegmuller, the Indian condemned to die, may not be hanged on Feb. 5, provided the efforts of Nevada’s most prominent citizens are strong enough to prevent it. The movement to have the board of pardons commute the sentence of the condemned red man started a few weeks ago.

A woman from the Rocking J. Ranch near here is in serious but not critical condition today after the car she was driving collided head on with another automobile yesterday six miles north of Carson City.
