Senior Keenan Waller will graduate in May with his high school diploma as well as his Associate of Science from Western Nevada College.
“My time at Oasis was overall enjoyable and I'm glad to be graduating from here,” Waller said.
Starting at Oasis Academy College Prep his sophomore year of high school, Waller has enjoyed most one particular subject.
“My favorite subject has been my math classes, because they were the classes I was able to get through the easiest and quickest,” Waller said.
During his duration at the school, he’s had many memorable experiences with his friends and participated in both golf and played saxophone in the music ensemble.
“I don't really have any one teacher to thank, all of my teachers have been great. But I would say counselor Andy Lenon has been the most helpful throughout my time at Oasis,” Waller added. “The only advice I'd give would be to keep up with classes and not to put anything off.”
Upon graduating, Waller plans to either join the military or attend the University of Nevada, Reno.
High School Academic Olympics season buzzing
What 1967 war faced protests at the Pentagon and on several college campuses? What city lies on the Yamuna River and was partially developed by Herbert Baker and Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century? These are just a sample of questions the Academic Olympic Team must be able to answer.
Quiz Bowl, more formally known as National Academic Quiz Tournaments LLC, is an academic competition where teams of students from different schools test their knowledge through buzzers and intricate questions.
Ramona Price, a special education and social studies teacher, is Oasis Academy College Prep’s first academic team coach. As a mentor and lead for the inaugural high school team, Price is optimistic and has been encouraging the students through the new experience.
Thus far, the team has attended competitions in Silver Springs, Yerington and Dayton.
As a new team that is learning the ins and outs of the program, students have enjoyed the opportunity to participate, and meet other students from the region with similar interests.
“It’s surprisingly fun and competitive, so I encourage anyone interested to join,” said junior Thanh Nguyen.
The team is open to any students interested in participating and that can attend weekly meets and practices.
As these students pursue their first season in the academic competition, they are excited to test their knowledge and meet other philomaths across Nevada. For information on the Academic Olympic Team, contact Price at rprice@oanv.org.
