Travel back in time to Victorian England and immerse yourself in mystery and a tale of cat and mouse in the Proscenium Players, Inc. production of “Gaslight.”
The Carson City theater group turns the perception of that idyllic era on end with this tale of betrayal, despair and deception.
The production debuts in late February in the MJH Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center.
Gaslight, also produced under the name Angel Street, is a dark tale of a marriage based on deceit and trickery, and a husband committed to driving his wife insane in order to steal from her. The plot becomes even more twisted with the discovery of an unsolved murder in their home.
Director Steven Segal says the incredible writing, intense subject matter and the dramatic finale drew him to the production.
“The story is about mystery, overcoming in the most intense circumstances, and a cautionary tale of utter evil, viciousness, greed, and psychopathy,” he said. “This play is intended for mature audiences as it revolves around extremely heavy subject matters. It is a harsh, dark drama that dives deep into the psyche.”
Written in 1938 by playwright Patrick Hamilton, Gaslight, became a hit on Broadway, and scored rave reviews in the New York press. It has gone on to become one of the longest running non-musicals on Broadway. It has also been adapted into two films, both in the United States and Great Britain and are considered classics.
Segal says despite the dark theme, the tale is also one of hope. “The script embraces the theory that even in the darkest moments, the light isn't far behind, waiting to be found for goodness, kindness and justice.” He adds, “It’s an absolutely amazing story with an incredible cast. It's truly remarkable to see it.”
