After a license suspension in mid-January due to health code violations, Comma Coffee in downtown Carson City has reopened its doors.

“We’re really glad to be reopened. We’re better than ever,” owner June Joplin told the Appeal on Monday.

A Jan. 18 inspection report that led to temporary closure noted violations like mice feces found near the shop’s prep sink as well as cat dishes found near utensil storage. The inspection was performed by the Carson City and Douglas County Public Health Regional Partnership.

Joplin said she’s working with a pest controller to address mice issues, but there was no evidence of large-scale infestation. She said the shop had a reinspection on Jan. 30 and “passed with flying colors.”

The shop reopened Feb. 2, Joplin said, in time for the Nevada legislative session. The shop is located on Carson Street directly across from the Nevada Legislature. Joplin said she wanted to reopen earlier but had frozen pipes from cold weather.

“When it rains, it pours,” she said.

Joplin said the coffee shop is “on good terms” with the health department. She said with the new year, business feels fresh, especially after three years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A nice fresh start — it actually feels really good,” Joplin said. “A new year, a new day.”

Established in 2000, Comma Coffee is located at 312 S. Carson St. Regular business hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, call 775-883-2662.
