Dear Reader, on a recent walk at Liberty Park, I was delightfully surprised by a big, adorable dog bounding toward me as if we had known each other for years. His coat was gleaming and his tall lean body was poetry in motion. What a beauty!
I did not recognize his breed and asked the owner what kind of dog he was. At first, I thought he said Visa like a credit card, but he actually said, “Vizsla.” Honestly, I had never heard of the breed, so I set out to learn more about them.
The Vizla or Hungarian pointer has an ancient history. Etchings from the early 10th century show Magyar warriors and dogs resembling Vizslas. During World War I the breed almost became extinct but was miraculously preserved by Vizsla fanciers and were eventually recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960.
Described as the “Velcro Vizsla” they attach to their people. They literally stick by their people leaning against their legs, acting as foot warmers, and shadowing their daily routine. Mostly, they need a job to do and plenty of exercise. If you like long walks, playing fetch, jogging, or hunting you will have a friend forever.
Their beautiful shiny coat does not require lots of work, because they do not have an undercoat. There is rarely a need for bathing, as they do not have a strong doggy odor. They love to be petted or stroked and a once a week brushing keeps them happy.
I am looking forward to my next encounter with the magnificent dog, but I know he will not visit very long because his person is his passion.
