Cattlemen’s Update
The University of Nevada, Reno will host the annual Cattlemen’s Update in person and virtually in 2023 during the second week of January.
The annual event stops in Fallon at the Convention Center on Jan. 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be provided.

Times given for the in-person sessions are registration times, with the program beginning 30 minutes later. The cost is $20 per ranch per location attended, which includes lunch or dinner and the “Red Book” recordkeeping guide for cattle producers.

The three- to four-hour in-person sessions will be moderated by Barry Perryman, researcher, professor and chair of the College’s Department of Agriculture, Veterinary & Rangeland Sciences.
CAPS fundraiser
The Churchill Animal Protection Society is having a spaghetti dinner and silent auction on Jan. 13 from 5-7 p.m. at Epworth Church, 280 E. Stillwater Ave.
The cost is $12 per person, $20 for two or $40 for four.
Many great silent auction items will be available for bidding.
Churchill County Museum
The planned New Year’s Eve Mad Hatter’s Ball event at the Life Center was postponed until later in 2023. No date set as yet.
Those who bought tickets can return them in person or via USPS for a full refund. Please print legibly when requesting your refund.
Fallon Youth Volleyball League
Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 24-Feb. 18
City-County Gym
For girls in grades fourth through sixth grades, the Fallon Youth Volleyball League registration is now open.
League games and practices will be held at the City-County Gym on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. The season runs Jan. 24-Feb. 16.
Registration is open through Dec. 30 and the league is limited to 64 girls, so register ASAP. The fee is $40 per player and includes a T-shirt. For information and to register visit ChurchillCountyRecreation.org.
Youth Fastpitch clinic
Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 10-March 2
Location: City-County Gym*
Calling all youth athletes looking to improve their Fastpitch Softball pitching skills. Join pitching coach Tammie Shemenski for eight weeks of instruction to develop skills in the fundamentals of pitching.
The clinic is broken into two age categories, ages 6 to 12 and ages 13 to 18, the cost is $50 per child. It will be held at the City-County Gym on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings (*During Youth Volleyball League pitching clinic will be in the Oasis Academy Cafeteria).

Winter dog obedience classes
Puppy & Intermediate/Beginner Classes w/ Carla
Mondays, beginning Jan. 9
Location: Dry Gulch, 3C Event Complex
There are spaces open in our puppy and beginner/intermediate sessions of dog obedience classes. Dogs will learn how to focus on the owner/handler, how to perform basic commands and basic obedience skills, while owners will learn respect for their pets and how to control them correctly.
This is a six-class session, and cost for registration is $65 per dog. Classes begin Jan. 10.

WNC nursing
WNC's Nursing program applicants are reminded of upcoming dates to take the required entrance exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Testing is scheduled Jan. 26, Feb. 3, Feb. 24, March 3 and March 16. Testing is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cedar Building 320 on the Carson City campus.
Check in at 8:30 a.m. Students must complete the entrance exam no later than April 1, 2023, to be considered for admission into the Fall 2023 Nursing program.

The Central Nevada Health District will serve Churchill, Eureka and Mineral counties along with the City of Fallon when it is established next month..

January events:
A representative with EmployNV will be at the library on Jan. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. to help you find your new job for the new year. Learn about resources offered job seekers from the State of Nevada.
Read: “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” encourages youngsters to read age-appropriate books before entering school. Book titles are suggested and offered by library staff. Sign-ups accepted at any time.
In-person story time offered Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Children’s Librarian Jeslyn MacDiarmid reads picture books to children and offers a craft to accompany most stories. Each session is recorded and posted to the library’s YouTube account for on-demand viewing at your convenience.
Reading with Rover takes place on Jan. 12 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Children read books to dogs to improve their reading skills and confidence to a decidedly captive audience. Added bonus: our furry friends are great listeners.
