The Scots: A meeting and supper was held in their new hall. They plan to celebrate the birth of their sweetest of sweet poets – Robert Burns. Hunt & Phillips of the Fountain Restaurant are engaged to prepare the supper which will be fine. We know from experience that the Scots will not fail to enjoy themselves at the table entertainment and treat their friends royally.

In brief: The Episcopal Church will be thoroughly warmed for morning and evening service today. Private advice received here state that large numbers of cattle are freezing to death in the eastern parts of the state.

To the lake: The stage for Glenbrook pulled out this morning with a four-horse sleigh, a supply of provisions with hay and grain was also sent up the hill. Snowshoes are attached and the mail will go over the summit on the shoes. It will be late in the season before the Glenbrook is open again to travel. The stage was only able to reach St. Rest and was compelled to return on account of the snow.

Editorial – V&T shops gone: Two years ago, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad shops were destroyed, and the good stones hauled to California. Today the lot is empty. The reason the property owner gave was that the property needed to be developed.

Treadways park: Aaron Treadway vs. Bank of Nevada. The old Treadway ranch is where all the picnics of the state have been held for a quarter of a century. Treadway endorsed a note on the Nevada Bank, being told it was only a formality as there was stock enough to secure the note. The note fell due, the maker died, and a suit began. As soon as the bank began to show its claws, Old Tread, in his 75th year, secretly married his deceased brother’s widow, and they entered the property as a homestead. He showed his matrimonial and homestead documents, and the bank was fired out of court, to the great joy of Tread’s friends.

All sorts: The man who won the elegant vase at the Episcopal entertainment was major Ford who came within five beans of the true figures. E.B. Rail made a calculation which took him four days to figure out and came within 72 of the real figures. Major Ford is a better guesser than Rail is a mathematician.

Bob-sled accident: A sled was overturned, tossing the thirty-five occupants to the frozen street. Several more or less were severely bruised: Miss Bunnie Nulty, arm broken; Sumner Young, lip torn; Mrs. Neva Rich, face badly cut and wrist sprained. None of the thirty-five escaped injury.

Basil Woon: Carson City author and publicist has brought a $350,000 damage suit against several major motion picture producing and distributing companies. Warner Bros., Fox-West Coast Theatres… Each defendant corporation is accused of unfair competition and unauthorized use. Woon claims that the defendants “willfully, deliberately and unlawfully” appropriated his distinctive name and title… Woon now lives in Washoe Valley. (Basil Woon donated $20,000 to the county make a park in remembrance of his wife, Fuji.)

Dance: A lively dance was held and a young gentleman desiring more air, and not being able to find some inside, pushed his clenched manipulating article through a pane and carried a ham off with him.

Decorative club: We – known ladies of this city, have a new club and at present are engaged in decorating China and porcelain ware. They have a kiln from San Francisco that will enable them to render their work imperishable. The Appeal reporter has seen some of the artistic successes, and they are superb.

Robins: Large flocks of robins have been driven from the mountains and the brush. They are feeding on the fruit that was left in the orchards. A flock of at least a hundred robins have been visiting the Ardery orchard and cleaned the trees of fruit.

Scotty: Our well-known Carson gunsmith had a little pistol to repair and when he cocked it and uncocked it, the wicket little thing went off and shot him through the center of his left forefinger. Dr. Waters was called in and cut off the afflicted member while the patient, who stood the pain with remarkable fortitude, was held blind-folded by Billy Wilson.

Female sports: Nightly, several women can be seen indulging in keno gambling at Sweeney’s saloon. After playing a while without success, there was a look of disgust on their faces.

Women’s suffrage: In the assembly the amendment to the constitution providing for the enfranchisement of women is up. The measure was passed two years ago. It will be acted upon within a few days. It will pass, unanimously. In the next election every voter in Nevada will have a chance to say if he wants women to vote.

New weapons tested with troops: The combination troop-training and atomic testing will start in March with 18,000 men of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines participating in the huge proving ground near Las Vegas. It is speculated that an atomic shell will be fired for the first time by the Army’s new 11-inch atomic cannon…

Carson High: Carson High School will put on a musical, “South Pacific,” with a huge cast, chorus, and Polynesian dancers. The musical is being directed by Stewart Peebles and Karen Chandler and will be performed at the Carson City Community Center in April.
