Those celebrating the Fourth of July in Carson City on Tuesday mostly behaved themselves, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
“The Fourth of July went really, really well,” Furlong said Wednesday. “The Carson City crowd was very large and extremely cooperative.”
Furlong said festivities were well-coordinated between the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department. According to Visit Carson City, Tuesday marked 30 years of the fireworks show at Mills Park.
Furlong noted some traffic issues around the park and East William Street but said because there was no carnival over the weekend, law enforcement incidents were fewer.
Furlong did say there were two incidents of police cars being hit on the Sunday preceding the holiday. One was a minor incident, and one led to an arrest for driving under the influence.
“If you’re drinking and driving, don’t run into a police car,” Furlong said.
He said one challenge over the holiday was responding to illegal fireworks calls. CCSO policy is to provide a warning to those engaged in the misdemeanor offense and then write a ticket if officers respond to the same location a second time.
“It is a challenge every year,” Furlong said.
He said CCSO could double in size and still not be able to respond to all fireworks calls. However, overall, the sheriff was happy with the relative peace of Fourth of July revelers.
“Thank you to everybody for a good weekend,” he said. “It’s important to us.”
