The Greenwave softball and baseball teams cleaned up several of the big postseason awards as announced by the 3A coaches.
For softball, Kasey Chu was named the 3A East Coach of the Year and senior Lydia Bergman picked up the Player of the Year after breaking the school’s single-season and all-time home-run records this spring.
Along with Bergman, junior third baseman Reece Hutchings, junior outfielder Kiley Wallace and sophomore hurler Vernita Fillmore were selected to the 3A East First Team. Sophomore outfielder Dana Buckmaster was named to the Second Team, and sophomore catcher Taralynn Vershum and freshman pitcher Janessa Bettencourt were named Honorable Mention.
Bergman was also named Co-Player of the Year for the 3A North, and Hutchings, Wallace and Fillmore were named to the All-North First Team. Although Bergman was Co-Player of the Year in the region, the coaches voted her to the All-State Second Team along with Hutchings and Wallace. Fillmore was the team’s only First Team selection.
Bergman led the league in hitting with a .615 batting average and was second in the state in home runs with 14 and RBIs with 59.
On the baseball diamond, junior Baylor Sandberg was named the 3A East Player of the Year and 3A North Co-Player of the Year, and then selected to the All-State First Team. Sandberg was dangerous both at the plate and in the field, especially on the mound when he led the Greenwave to a win over Spring Creek in the final series of the regular season before picking up a critical win over North Valleys in the regional tournament.
In 102 plate appearances, Sandberg hit .494 with one homer, three triples and 39 RBIs. Although his earned-run average ranks fourth on the team, it wasn’t until late in the season when Sandberg started to dominate the opposition. He held Spring Creek and North Valleys each to a run early last month.
Senior outfielder Cooper Lee, junior infielder/utility Brady Alves and sophomore southpaw pitcher James Kelsey were named to the 3A East First Team. Junior catcher Carter Paul and junior hurler Bryce Adams were named to the Second Team.
Aside from Sandberg, Kelsey was named to the All-North First Team, and Alves and Lee made the Second Team. Kelsey was selected to the All-State Second Team.
