After 25 years at Carson High School, separated into two stints, Blair Roman announced he has taken a new position away from the high school.
Roman will become the principal at Eureka High School.
The outgoing Senator athletic director first started at Carson High in the fall of 1994 before departing for North Valleys in 2001.
Roman returned and coached football from 2005 to 2021, becoming head coach in 2008.
In 2016, the Douglas High graduate became the athletic director at Carson High School.
In total he spent 25 years at Carson High and served as a head football coach between the two schools for 18 years.
“I am very, very fortunate to experience the career I’ve experienced here. I could not be more humbled and fortunate to do what I’ve done here. The ability to move on to Eureka really came down writing a new chapter in my life, finishing out my education career and a new adventure and challenge. It is definitely going to be that as a principal out there,” said Roman on Episode 80 of the Appeal’s Behind the Bench podcast.
Changing positions
The toughest challenge for Roman was the pandemic, starting in March 2020.
“You can talk to any AD in the United States, it was a tremendously challenging time for high school athletics,” said Roman. “It was awful for athletes and it was awful for coaches and athletic directors in general.”
In his seven years as athletic director, Carson High won 10 conference championships, four regional championships and one state title — coming this past fall in girls cross country.
The school also took home five academic state championships.
“I was very proud of our coaches and our athletes of what they accomplished from that standpoint. But we definitely had our challenges at times in terms of competing at a high level for whatever reason,” Roman said. “Navigating that, and trying to do what I could from a support standpoint for our coaches, you know, I did the best I could. I’m proud of that and I’m proud of the effort that I put forth to support our coaches.”
Transitioning to becoming a principal will be a new experience for Roman.
It is not a post he has held before, but one he thinks he’s capable of handling.
“I kind of went down a unique path in terms of becoming a principal,” Roman said. “I do think the experience of being an athletic director. You cannot experience that I got as a 5A athletic director. It’s pretty significant to be honest with you.”
Leaving Carson High
As a football coach, Roman led a stretch of helping corral the Senators to five regional championship games in a six-year span from 2010 to 2015.
Over that six-year stretch, the Senators compiled a record of 52-18.
In total, Carson was 80-64 in his time in charge of the program.
Being four hours east from Carson City will be an adjustment, but he does hold some familial ties on his mother’s side to the area.
“It’s going to be different. It’s going to be a big change, it’s not a question. I am looking forward to meeting people in a new community. I am kind of looking at it as writing a new chapter and I am looking forward to that,” said Roman. “Anyone who knows my family on my mom’s side knows I have some Eastern Nevada roots, so I’m kind of excited to re-experience those.”
