A fast-moving hail and rainstorm caused localized flooding and debris flows around Carson City late Saturday afternoon.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Public Works crews responded after a mudslide on S. Curry Street near Casino Fandango and SaveMart caused traffic issues.
“The south end of town got hit pretty hard,” he said.
No weather-related traffic accidents were reported, Furlong said, though vehicles struggled with high runoff across the city.
“Most people slowed down, and that took care of it,” he said.
Rick Cooley, deputy director of Public Works, urged residents to avoid S. Curry Street, Clearview Drive and the Voltaire area for Saturday night. He said no damage to buildings was reported from the mudslide, but some patrons who had parked in the Galaxy Theaters parking lot had cars stuck in the muck. City crews assisted those stuck and cleared south Carson Street, where the debris flows had reached, Cooley said.
“As far as now, everything stayed within roadways and parking lots and a lot of debris through yards,” he said.
Cooley said local contractors like Justin Wilson Construction and Cruz Construction mobilized to provide equipment and help haul debris. The Goni Road area in north Carson was also affected by the storm, Cooley said.
“We’re getting on top of things and getting the water back where it should be,” he said. “Crews are out all over town clearing drains and clearing debris.”
Residents struggling with storm-related issues can call the city’s nonemergency dispatch lines at 775-887-COPS (2677) or 775-887-FIRE (3473).
The National Weather Service forecast more thunderstorms and potential rain for Sunday and the following week.
