All sorts: Lucky Baldwin passed through Carson for the lake. Lucky is getting pretty gray.

The pre-historic footprints at the state prison which have attracted so much attention from the scientific world, will bring many a tourist to this city via the Lake. These wonders should be advertised extensively.

Every lover of a good garden should send 10 cents for guide which can be deducted from first order—costs nothing. James Vick’s Sons, Rochester, N.Y.”

Lightning: The cabin occupied by Ike George, an Indian, and his family at Humboldt House was struck by lightning which wrecked the shanty and severely burned two of his children. The bolt struck the stove pipe and followed it down, tearing a large hole in the roof. On the inside of the cabin the electrical fluid played its usual freaks, but what is most remarkable is that the occupants were not killed. Dr. Samuels who was called to attend to them says that they will recover.

Morgues: SB528 introduced by the Human Resources Committee and referred to transportation, would target young defendants between the ages of 18 and 21. Defendants would see victims [in the morgue] “to demonstrate the results of accidents involving drivers under the influence…”

Bunker Hill: The American Flag floated to the breeze yesterday from several flagstaffs in honor of the anniversary of the fight of Bunker Hill.

Plucking: State gardener Daugherty was kept in the Capitol grounds all day Sunday to prevent women and children from plucking the flowers and otherwise despoiling the grounds. There is a law prohibiting persons from plucking flowers. Those who are caught in the act will be arrested and prosecuted.

Whitewashing: A number of Carsonites are taking the advice of John Woods, the nursery man, and are whitewashing their trees. The result is bound to be beneficial and make a neat appearance.

Atom spies: The supreme court refused to stay the execution of atom spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The condemned couple will go to the Sing Sing electric chair unless they can prevail on President Eisenhower to grant them clemency. The Rosenbergs were convicted in March 1951 of conspiring to slip atomic secrets to Russia.

A “sting” operation: A swarm of honeybees affixed themselves to a small tree near the Douglas County Law Enforcement Building. It’s created quite a buzz,” Gary Dykes, added with a smile. He was on the grass, a swirl of bees buzzing around him as he gently swept wriggling clumps of bees off the ground and into a wooden hive.

Lake Tahoe: The lake is the most popular place of resort to tourists and excursionists. Mort Reese, who went up with a party reports the road by King’s Canyon in excellent condition and the trip a delightful one. A number of visitors are now stopping at the Glenbrook; and business is also lively, and the mills are running to capacity.

140 Years Ago

Frightened: One of the guards at the state prison called at the Appeal office, and said he was the person who frightened the Roberts boy. As some of the guards had been stopped by footpads, he went prepared and had his six-shooter in his hand when he ran up against Roberts, who, seeing the weapon, thought he was about to be killed. All sorts: The horsemen are arranging for the biggest racing meet ever held in Nevada, this fall.

A petition was being circulated about town, the purport of which was that none of the present corps of teachers should be removed without cause.

Local news: Bowers’ Mansion in Washoe Valley is to be lighted with electricity supplied by a dynamo plant to be installed on the grounds.

The work of wiring the Park Hotel has been finished. It took over a mile of wire to do the work and every room in the big house is electrically lighted.

Warren firemen: The 90th annual banquet of Warren Engine Co. No. 1 was held at the Leisure Hour Hall. Byrd Lindsay installed officers for the coming year: Arnold Millard, president; D.K. Curious circumstance: A well-established fact that the bodies of persons drowned in Lake Tahoe have never been recovered. The clear cold waters refuse to give up their dead. The waters at the bottom of the lake are so icy cold as actually to arrest decomposition and consequent expansion of the dead body, one of the conditions under which it would be expected to return to the surface. Loosening up for the carnival: Festivities have begun on the Comstock. The streets were ablaze with electric lights. The air was resonant with exploding fireworks. The hilarity prevailing was heightened by a parade of Satan and a retinue of imps in which King Comstock, armed with pitchforks, made a very credible chief devil.

Carson City Guide: Grahame Hardy, proprietor of the Country Store, has published a pictorial called the “Carson City Guide.” It lists all of the stores and points of interest in Carson plus 68 old and new pictures and two maps. Photos are by Gus Bundy, E. S. Hammack did the artwork and Basil Woon, the writing.
