A 67-year-old Carson City man died after being struck by a vehicle in the 4900 block of Highway 50 East around 6 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
The man was allegedly jaywalking in the middle of the highway, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. The driver, a young man who lives in the area, was in a compact SUV. The older man died on scene.
“Pedestrian accidents are horrific,” Furlong said Friday.
Furlong said not all pedestrian incidents happen in a sidewalk or crosswalk. He said dressing in dark clothing and jaywalking is “unbelievably risky.”
“Pedestrians cannot use those highways and dodge traffic to cross,” he said.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
Furlong encouraged residents to be safe.
“That message extends to the downtown corridors as well,” he said.
