The Oasis Academy softball and baseball teams were finally able to open their seasons after a delayed start due to weather and field conditions.

The Bighorns made the best of their opener as the softball team swept a doubleheader, 12-2 and 11-5, from Virginia City and the baseball team, in its first year, took down Excel Christian, 15-0, on Friday in Fallon.

The softball team scored the opening game’s first 11 runs en route to the mercy-rule victory.

Senior Stacey Bogdanowicz led the team with a three-hit, three-RBI performance and freshman Taylor Hyde drove in a pair of runs on two hits. Junior Enede Rios drove in one and sophomore Kirsten Detomasi singled twice. Sophomore Kaylin Guthrie had the team’s only extra-base hit (a triple).

Detamosi led the team in the circle, striking out 13 of the 20 batters she faced. She allowed four hits, two earned runs and one walk.

The nightcap was a different story but the same result.

Six Bighorns drove in runs, with sophomore Taylynn Maynez and Guthrie each driving in two. Guthrie’s runs came on a triple. Enede Rios, sophomore Lorena Rios, freshman Grace Laca and Detomasi each drove in one. Senior Lainey Hyde led the team in hits with two.

Detamosi pitched all seven innings in the second game, striking out six while allowing three hits and five earned runs. She walked seven.

Virginia City led 4-1 in the fourth inning before Oasis Academy scored eight runs in the bottom half.

The Oasis Academy baseball team wasted no time scoring in its mercy-rule game. The Bighorns scored three runs in the first, five in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fourth.

Freshmen Kayden White and Matthew Bird were perfect at the plate with White hitting safely in four attempts and Bird in three, including a double and two RBI. Freshman Ryder McNabb drove in five runs on two hits, sophomore Zachary Budner doubled twice to drive in four and freshman Trevor Barrenchea singled in two runs.

The Bighorns also swiped nine bags, with Budner and Bird each having two steals.

On the hill, McNabb and Bird combined for the shutout with McNabb striking out six in three innings while yielding two walks against no hits. Bird struck out one in one inning.
