Elizeth Acuna, this week’s Senior in the Spotlight, may be speaking for all seniors when she says what she is not going to miss about high school. “I won’t miss coming in early every morning.” She is also not going to miss studying and taking tests, but that won’t last long. She’ll be heading to Western Nevada College in the fall to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. “I have been dreaming of working in law enforcement since I was a child,” she said.
Acuna moved to the U.S. from Mexico six years ago.
She went back the following year but then returned to Carson City as an 8th grader. Even though she did not speak English when she moved to Carson, she studied hard and is a fluent English speaker. In spite of the language barrier, she has earned a 3.2 GPA. That tenacity has helped her get through many difficult circumstances and made her capable of reaching her goals.
She said, “something I have accomplished is to be myself, to not be scared of anyone or anything and to learn how to get myself out of a deep hole without anyone’s help and do better for myself.”
