The U.S. Flag Code establishes advisory rules for the display and care of the flag of the United States. These rules include guidance regarding the proper disposal of U.S. flags that are unfit for display, and the preferred method for disposal (known as retirement) is burning.
A formal retirement ceremony will occur June 14 at Fire Station 52, 2400 E. College Parkway. The ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. featuring Mayor Lori Bagwell as the speaker.
Flag Day is observed June 14 to honor and commemorate the adoption of the American flag, which occurred in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.
At the formal U.S. flag retirement ceremony conducted by Carson City Fire Department and Carson City Community Emergency Response Team, dignitaries, veterans and other guests will witness a ceremonial burning of a U.S. flag “in honor of our country and what our flag stands for,” according to a press release sent by the city.
A donation box has been created and placed near the entrance of Station 51, the Carson City Fire Department headquarters, 777 S. Stewart St. U.S. flags can be placed in the box for disposal at any time. The Carson City Fire Department, in concert with the Carson City Community Emergency Response Team, identified a need for a durable and easily accessible box where community members could dispose of their worn or tattered U.S. flags “to ensure that the flags would be disposed of respectfully.”
