Douglas High softball took care of business once again Tuesday, holding serve at home with a 13-3 win over McQueen in six innings.

The Lancers scored a pair of runs in the first, but the Tigers responded right away with two runs of their own in the home half of the first inning.

Haley Wilkinson belted a leadoff home run over the left field wall before Zora Simpson knocked in the second run on an RBI sac fly.

In the second inning, Cam McClelland doubled to center, scoring two runs and bringing Wilkinson back to the plate.

Like her first at-bat, Wilkinson waited through the first two pitches before launching her 10th home run of the season, and second of the game, over the center field fence.

Simpson drove in the fifth run of the inning on a double, giving the Tigers a 7-2 lead after two.

Seniors Bre Williams and Dakota Till were 3-for-4 and 1-for-4, respectively, while fellow senior Mackenzie Willis struck out six and allowed four hits.

“I grew up playing with these girls. I love every one of them. They’re all very special,” said Williams.

The senior said her ability to battle through two-strike counts is one of her best talents at the plate.

Williams is hitting .477 with 26 RBIs.

“The group of people and the environment we built as a team. It’s my home away from home,” said Till, who is hitting .457 with 20 RBIs.

For coach John Glover, all three seniors have been huge contributors to the team’s success over the last few seasons.

“Bre has really anchored down first base for us this season. She’s a quiet leader,” said Glover. “Till brings a goofiness and the team has fun around her. Mack (Willis) has been with us on varsity for four years. … Mack has had a phenomenal year and always a smile.”

The win Tuesday officially secured the Tigers as the No. 1 seed for next week’s Class 5A North regional tournament.

Douglas baseball blanks Carson

For the second time this season the Douglas High baseball team put up a 5-0 shutout over its rivals to the North.

Wednesday’s game was played at Carson and the Tigers jumped out in front early behind a four-run first inning.

Keegan Snooks threw four innings and struck out five before senior Kaden McIver took over and punched out six more hitters.

Combined, the two allowed eight baserunners in seven innings.

At the plate, the Tigers took advantage of two leadoff walks, allowing Jackson Ovard to come to bat with runners on.

Ovard lined a single to center field, which scored one run and Owen Evans followed with an RBI single of his own to give Douglas a 3-0 lead.

Evans came around to score on a wild pitch.

Decarlo Quintana and Tanner Boheimer both recorded a pair of hits for the Senators in the loss.

Tyler Palmer came on in relief for Carson and threw 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run and striking out three.

Senator softball bowls over Bishop Manogue

After being run-ruled twice by the Miners earlier this season, the Carson High softball team returned the favor Tuesday with an 18-1 win over Bishop Manogue in three innings.

The win moves Carson to 3-11 this season in Class 5A league play and bumps the Senators up into the seven seed with two league games remaining.
