Students buzzed, laughed, and sighed as they navigated the benefits and pitfalls of financial planning. Some saved hundreds as they shopped frugally, while others went into debt as they purchased their very first Ferrari.
As Oasis’ first “Bite of Reality” event came to an end, it was clear that it was a success and students learned about smart financial strategies, real-world investments, and the importance of credit.
The Bite of Reality was an interactive app-based program meant to educate students on realistic life expenses in a safe and supportive environment. Students were randomly assigned an occupation, monthly pay, spousal pay, children, credit card debt, as well as a credit score. Depending on their situation, the students used the resources available to them to navigate a month of real-life expenses, while also managing random events that may affect their livelihoods or financial situations.
Nevaeh Routt, an up-and-coming Oasis freshman, reflects.
“It was really hard to budget money while still trying to get quality stuff, so I am happy that I attended the event and got to learn,” Routt said.
The Bite of Reality was a success as it engaged 45 students and introduced them to real-world expectations and obligations. The event was organized by Angela Guthrie and Andrea Cavanaugh of Financial Horizons Credit Union, as well as Andy Lenon, the Oasis Academy High School counselor.
Additionally, the event received support and help from staff and parent volunteers. The contributions and support from community members have enabled our pupils to be successful in the future.

The Student Council hosts the annual dance. This year’s theme was Enchanted Forest and the venue was decorated accordingly.

“It was an enchanted night. The kids were dressed to the nines and had a fabulous time. It was so good to see them dancing and having fun,” said Rochelle Tisdale, chief academic officer.
Senior Spotlight: Eric Morales
Oasis Academy College Prep Senior Eric Morales will graduate from high school this month. Morales started at Oasis in 2021 during the COVID pandemic.
During his time at Oasis, Morales was an advocate. During his junior year, he and fellow student, James Cosman, worked with Mayor Ken Tedford for a proclamation from the city of Fallon to name March as Hemophilia Awareness Month. Morales also played basketball for the Bighorns.
“My advice for future students is to explore all your options in everything you do because there may be other choices for the same answer,” Morales said.
Morales would like to thank his mentor Terri Siegrist.
After graduation he is looking forward to exploring life and having fun.
