Koenig, Cosman lead Fallon swimming at regional

A pair of juniors and a relay team qualified for this weekend’s 3A state swimming meet in Carson City.

Fallon’s Zachary Koenig won the 100-yard breaststroke and finished second in the 100 free and Grace Cosman took third in the 100 breaststroke to represent the school in the individual events.

In the relays, the 200 free team of Koenig, sophomore Miles Henning and freshmen Michale Liston and Brody Reynolds finished fourth.

The state meet is Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The top eight swimmers from Friday’s preliminaries advanced to Saturday’s final. All relays were contested as finals. The ninth- and 10th-place finishers were selected as alternates.

Koenig won the 100 breaststroke prelims and finals in comfortable fashion. He swam it in 1 minute, 1.43 seconds to win by 4 seconds. His time is the second-best in the state.

Koenig finished second in the 100 free in 50.88, about 4 seconds from the winning time. Liston finished 12th in 1:03.82.

According to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book dating back to 1997, no Fallon swimmer has won state.

Cosman finished third in both the prelims and finals but she improved her time from 1:18.89 to 1:17.62. She finished sixth in the 100 back in 1:12.19. She improved her time from the prelims but fell one place.

The boys 200 free relay team finished fourth in 1:53.36, about 10 seconds ahead of fifth, to qualify for state.

Results for other Fallon swimmers included:

• Senior Evelyn O’Neill placed sixth in the 200 free in 2:17.10 after running the preliminary race in 2:18.45. Katelen Helton finished 14th in the prelims in 2:35.59 and senior Rebecca Smith was 16th in 2:40.76.

• O’Neill placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke, trimming her time by almost two seconds from the prelims, to record a 1:22.83 in her final race.

• Reynolds and freshman William McLean finished 11th and 12th in the 200 free in 2:30.21 and 2:36.53. Junior Evelyn Lott finished 10th in the girls 200 individual medley in 2:58.09 and 20th in the 100 free in 1:14.59.

• Sophomore Jocylyn Miller finished 13th in the 50 free in 30.06. Miller and Smith finished 18th and 19th in the 500 free in 8:15.77 and 8:17.66.

• Senior Gerik Wassmuth took 15 seconds off his 500 free time to finish sixth in the finals race in 6:19.53. Liston improved on his prelim time of 28.45 to finish seventh in the 50 free in 27.46. • Reynolds finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.86 and McLean was 13th in 1:29.19.

• In the relays, the girls 200 medley relay team of Lott, O’Neill, Miller and Cosman finished less than 4 seconds away from qualifying for state. They finished fifth in 2:18.22.

• The boys 200 medley relay team of Henning, McLean, Wassmuth and Koenig finished sixth in 2:08.51.

• The 200 free relay team of Lott, O’Neill, Cosman and Smith finished sixth in 2:04.35. The girls 400 free relay team of Helton, Smith, Miller and freshman Miranda Reeder finished seventh in 4:54.82. The boys 400 free relay team of Wassmuth, Reynolds, Liston and McLean finished fifth in 4:22.92, about 5 seconds from going to state.
