Update, 3:35 p.m.:

Central Lyon Fire District personnel along with Storey County firefighters have stopped forward progress on an estimated 3- to 5-acre brush fire east of Dayton on the Minor Ranch, according to Central Lyon Fire Chief Rich Harvey.

The fire was originally a permitted agricultural burn that spread, Harvey said. Fire crews and half a dozen engines responded to the private property at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Nobody got hurt, and the firefighters are good,” Harvey said.

He expected the fire to be fully contained within a few hours.

“We’re going to be out here a while,” he said. “Transitioning from catching it, holding it to mopping it up.”

Harvey pointed out controlled burns are appropriate for this time of year, but fuel conditions can change.

“Fire can still do its thing. Just be careful,” he said.
