The Carson City Fire Department has been a bit busy, battling a structure fire Sunday night and delivering a baby the following day.

“C-shift had a very busy tour these past two days,” CCFD posted on Facebook on Tuesday. “Significant events included a late-night structure fire on Sunday night, and the same crews delivered a baby on Monday night. If that wasn’t eventful enough, they responded to 58 emergency incidents and trained on spotting the ladder truck at various buildings throughout Carson City.”

Commenters on the social media page lauded the firefighters’ hard work. Wednesday, Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said the structure fire occurred at 11:54 p.m. Sunday at 2680 Poole Way.

“A total of 17 firefighters responded to the blaze,” he said by email. “Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack from the interior of the home while simultaneously searching for possible trapped occupants. The fire was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes, and no one was home at the time of the fire.

A man suspected of starting the blaze has been arrested.

“The fire caused approximately $100,000 in damage, there were no injuries, and the cause is under investigation,” he said.

Without disclosing too many details, Slamon said CCFD paramedics delivered a baby in another home Monday.

“The baby is a healthy baby boy,” he said. “It is not uncommon for us to get a dispatch for a potential childbirth; actually delivering a baby before we arrive at the hospital is a rare occurrence.”

Slamon said last year, CCFD delivered one child, and the year before that, the department delivered two babies from separate calls.

“Carson City Fire will respond with at least two firefighter paramedics for a potential childbirth,” he said. “All Carson City firefighters are certified, at a minimum, as Emergency Medical Technicians and are trained in childbirth.”

Slamon said it’s important to note that when a child is delivered, “we now have two patients that need immediate care (mom and baby).”
