CHS girls cross country 2nd at Clovis

After winning a Class 5A state title last year, the Carson High girls cross country seems to be in full swing in early October.

This past weekend, the Senators traveled to the Clovis (California) Invitational and took second place out of 42 eligible teams.

Sophomore Hannah Budd continues to pace the squad, taking third place in 18:43.

Vea Miner was 24th overall in 19:40 while fellow sophomore Brianna Rodriguez-Nunez was 28th in 19:45.

Madison Hager took 33rd for the Senators, finishing just ahead of teammate Jinnie Ponczoch in 41st.

Eleanor Romeo was 79th in 21:00 and freshman Anna Shane finished in 21:33 for 110th overall.

There were 283 girls competing.


Senator boys 21st at Clovis

The Carson High boys cross country was 21st of 39 qualifying teams at the Clovis Invite over the weekend.

Junior Sawyer Macy was fifth out of 271 runners at 15:58.

Sophomore Sean Thornton took 66th overall in 16:58 and Alex Miner was 79th in 17:08.

Nate Freed just missed the top half with a 150th place finish in 17:52.


Carson boys soccer rallies to tie Galena

Trailing 3-1 nearly midway through the second half Saturday, Carson High boys soccer was able to battle back and tie Galena, 3-3.

Trigo Burciaga cut the deficit to one, 3-2, with a goal in the 56th minute while Kael Walt ultimately tied the contest, converting a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

Carson’s opening goal came off the foot of Angel Flores in the eighth minute.

The Senators dominated possession over the final 25 minutes to pull out the point.

UP NEXT: Carson (7-5-2, 4-4-2 in league) will travel south to Douglas (1-14-1, 0-5) this Saturday for another league tilt with the Tigers.


Elko, Spring Creek volleyball sweep Dayton 

The Dust Devil volleyball team couldn’t keep pace with Elko on Friday, falling 3-0.

Individual set scores and stats were not reported.

Saturday, Spring Creek also posted a 3-0 win over the Dust Devils – 25-21, 31-29, 26-24.

UP NEXT: Dayton (6-10, 2-5 in Class 3A North) will host Smith Valley (23-2, 10-0) Thursday at 5 p.m.


Pershing County too strong for Dayton football

Dayton High continued to have trouble against a tough, physical Pershing County squad, falling 36-0 on Friday.

Archie Ervin was Dayton’s leading ballcarrier with nine rushes for 28 yards.

Defensively, Ivor Evans had a team-high 18 tackles while Tristan Johnston (14) and Lyrik Council (13) both finished with double-digit tackles in the loss.

UP NEXT: Dayton (4-3) will travel to North Tahoe (0-6) for a 7 p.m. contest Friday.


Lieb’s hat trick carries Dayton over West Wendover

Macy Lieb had three goals and an assist in Dayton’s 6-0 win over West Wendover.

The Dust Devils also had goals from senior Kiley McGrew, junior Lida Krodel and sophomore Emma McQuain.

UP NEXT: Dayton (7-6, 7-6 in Class 3A league play) will host Spring Creek (8-10, 7-5) Friday at 3:45 p.m.


Owyhee football bests Sierra Lutheran

Owyhee High football got over the Falcons on Saturday by a final of 54-28.

Individual statistics were not reported.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (2-4) will travel to Carlin (1-5) Thursday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
