The Churchill County High volleyball team came back after losing the first game to defeat Lowry on Friday to begin the second half of the 3A East season.
Fallon (6-0) swept the season series from Lowry, which finished second in last year’s regional tournament, 22-25, 25-13, 26-24 and 26-24, at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium.
The senior duo of Reece Hutchings and Kiley Wallace powered Fallon with half of the team’s kills as they each collected a double-double. Hutchings led the team with 16 kills and 17 digs, Wallace had 10 kills and a team-high 18 kills. Junior Vernita Fillmore also collected a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs.
Senior Keliah Brady added eight kills and senior Kaitlynn Hoffman added six. Hoffman, Hutchings and junior Raygen Bartel each had two aces, and Wallace tallied three block assists and three solos.
Fallon concludes its home season with a pair of matches this weekend: Spring Creek (3-2) on Friday at 6 p.m. and Elko (5-1) on Saturday at noon. The regular season ends next week with road matches in Fernley and Dayton.
The regional tournament begins on Oct. 28.
SOCCER
In a battle for first in the 3A East, the girls soccer team was shut out by Elko, 6-0, on Friday in Elko.
Fallon, which had won six straight before the loss, rebounded with a 3-1 win over Spring Creek on Saturday. Karlie Simper, Kourtnie Simper and Yasmien Laceste each scored.
The weekend split plus Lowry upsetting Elko created a logjam for three of the top four seeds in the 3A East. The top-four from the 3A East and West divisions advance to the playoffs.
Elko leads the 3A East with 33 points followed by Fernley with 27 and Fallon and Lowry each at 24.
Fallon traveled to Pershing County on Tuesday and hosted Battle Mountain on Wednesday. Fallon welcomes White Pine on Saturday before traveling to Fernley next weekend. The final game of the regular season is against Lowry on Oct. 24 in Fallon.
A three-game winning streak was snapped last weekend when the Fallon boys soccer team dropped a pair of games to Elko and Spring Creek at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
Fallon lost to Elko, 4-0, on Friday before falling to Spring Creek, 2-1, on Saturday.
Despite the weekend sweep, Fallon is still in position to qualify for the playoffs.
The Greenwave sit in fourth, the final spot, in the 3A East but they are only one point ahead of Fernley (13-12). Elko leads the division over Spring Creek, 25-24, followed by West Wendover with 16 points.
