The Douglas High School girls golf team won’t be hanging a regional championship banner for the third year in a row.

This season, the Tigers were moved up to the Northern 4A after back-to-back regional and state titles at 3A.

Bishop Manogue earned the 2023 4A North regional banner with a team score of 682. Reed was second with a 777.

Douglas took third as a team with a 787, punching their ticket back to the state tournament as the third and final qualifying team from the North.

The Tigers had three solid performances at the top of their lineup as Giana Zinke took third with a 165, missing a playoff for the individual title by one stroke.

“I think we definitely fit in in this league,” said Zinke. “I think we could’ve played in this league the past two years and had just as much success as we did before.”

Madison Frisby also was a medalist, taking sixth with a score of 93-90 for a 183 total, while Logan Karwoski was 15th, scoring a 101-99 (200).

“I think the jump from 3A to 4A, we thought it was going to be a bigger jump,” Karwoski said. “You could tell from the beginning we deserved to play up there.”

The move up was always going to present a bigger challenge for Douglas, but the team had to battle through some additional drama as well this fall.

“The beginning of our season was a little bit rocky. We had a situation that lessened our chances for state as a team,” Zinke said. “We still did really well.”

The addition of Kailynn Dollar and Adrianna Nuno to the varsity squad might have surprised the two, who were on JV to start the season, but their teammates were impressed with their dedication to their new roles.

“All the girls on our team; all of the JV players and the girls who didn’t really play at the very beginning is the reason we were successful in making it to state,” Karwoski said. “They challenged us every single day. … We definitely overcame adversity.”

A blustery, cold, two-day regional tournament was a quick reminder of how quickly weather can change in Northern Nevada.

“I think the conditions we’ve gone through as a team has shown what we’re made of,” Frisby said.

The Douglas team also was grappling with feeling under the weather, as a cold spread through the lineup leading into the regional tournament.

The Class 4A state event will be held in Las Vegas. On Monday, the Tigers will play at The Club at Sunrise, while Tuesday’s final day of competition will be at Aliante Golf Club.
