VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team saw its six-game division winning streak end Friday, but it’s still in control of first of the 3A East.
After being swept on Friday against Spring Creek (5-3), Fallon (7-1) quickly rebounded the next day to take down Elko (7-2) on Senior Day at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium.
With only two matches left in the season – Friday at Fernley and Tuesday at Dayton – the Greenwave can clinch the No. 1 seed with a weekend split. A pair of losses could see Fallon drop from first to third if Elko and Spring Creek win out.
What’s at stake is hosting the first round of the 3A Northern tournament Oct. 28 as the top-two seeds from each of the 3A East and 3A West will have a home match. The tournament then moves to Truckee next month for the semifinals and championship. The top-two teams advance to the state tournament in Reno.
In Fallon’s win 15-25, 25-18, 25-17 and 27-25 over Elko on Saturday, senior Reece Hutchings collected her second double-double of the weekend, leading the team in kills with 15 and digs with 21. Junior Vernita Fillmore dished out 35 assists and had 12 digs for the double-double.
Seniors Kiley Wallace and Keliah Brady each recorded eight kills, and junior Raygen Bartel added five to go with 17 digs. Brady led the team in aces with four, and Wallace had a team-high two blocks and added 16 digs.
On the team’s annual pink-out night, Spring Creek spoiled the festivities with a 25-21, 25-19 and 27-25 upset of Fallon, which defeated the Spartans in four games last month.
Hutchings had a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs with her kill total being more than a third of the team’s 32 kills. Bartel added six kills, senior Kaitlynn Hoffman and Wallace each had four, and junior Halle Johnson and Brady each added three. Fillmore and Wallace tied for the team lead in aces with two, while Hoffman, Hutchings and Johnson each had a block.
Senior Bailey Stritenberger led the team in digs with 16 and Wallace had 12. Fillmore added nine digs to go with 20 assists, and Johnson had six digs and nine assists.
GIRLS SOCCER
Despite being swept by Elko, the girls soccer team is still in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 seed from the 3A East.
Fallon extended its winning streak to three with a weekend sweep over West Wendover, 13-0, and White Pine, 8-0, to improve to 13-2 on the season but more importantly, increase its point total to 39 to take the lead in the 3A East.
Elko and Lowry are tied for second with 36 points, while Fernley is in fourth with 30. A win is worth three points while a tie is one point.
Fallon travels to Fernley on Friday at 3:45 p.m. followed by a pair of home games against Dayton on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Lowry on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
The No. 1 seed and divisional title could come down to next week’s game against the Buckaroos with the playoffs beginning in two weeks in Elko. Lowry, which gave Elko its only loss, travels to Dayton, returns home for Fernley before heading to Fallon next week. Elko, on the other hand, faces the bottom half of the division with games against Pershing County, White Pine, West Wendover and Spring Creek.
If Fallon and Elko don’t lose their remaining matches, then both would be tied for first. Elko, though, would win the tiebreaker.
In Friday’s home win over West Wendover, sophomore Jada Anatastio and freshman Kaylee Craig each scored two goals, and seniors Sofia Basurto, Kira Johnston and Madison Lewis, juniors Payton Oceuera, Yasmien Laceste and Kaitlin Goings, sophomore Kylee Simper and freshmen Kourtnie Simper and Karlie Simper each scored a goal. Craig led the team in assists with two, and Anatastio, Oceuera, Laceste, Kourtnie Simper, Karlie Simper and Johnston each had one.

The boys soccer team is in the heat of the race for one of four playoff spots with less than a week left in the regular season.
A 4-4 tie in last Friday’s home match against West Wendover followed by a 9-1 win over White Pine has Fallon in fourth place in the 3A East with three games left on the schedule.
No individual results were available.
Elko has a one-point lead over Spring Creek (31-30) for first place in the division followed by West Wendover with 18 points. Fallon, which tied West Wendover in the first meeting, sits in fourth with 17 points, three ahead of Lowry and five ahead of Fernley.
The top-four teams advance to the regional tournament in Elko in two weeks.
Fallon travels to Fernley on Friday for a 3:45 p.m. tilt before returning home on Saturday to face Dayton at 11:45 a.m. Fallon ends the season on Tuesday in Winnemucca with a 3:45 p.m. faceoff against the Buckaroos.
