CROSS COUNTRY

In the final meet of the season before this week’s Northern 3A region championships, the Greenwave finished third out of six teams in the Dave Marson Trail Run Cross Country Invitational at Sierra Lutheran in Carson City.

Fallon tallied 45 points as Wooster won the meet with 19 points.

The top times in the boys and girls divisions were 17 minutes, 58.13 seconds and 21:32.72.

Freshmen Leojro Chavez, Jackson Barbee and Takoda Pacheco finished 11th through 13th to lead the Greenwave. Chavez ran the 5,000-meter course in 21:41.85, followed by Barbee in 22:11.57 and Pacheco in 22:24:06. Freshman Alexander Sorensen finished the course in 25:36.59 followed by sophomore William McNeill in 26:04.16.

For the girls, freshman Abigail Lacow finished 12th in 31:57.52.

Fallon has no upperclassmen this season.

The next stop is the region meet on Friday at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park next to the University of Nevada, Reno, campus.

The 3A Northern girls division will kick off at 10:40 a.m. followed by the 3A boys at 1:10 p.m. The top-four teams plus the top-seven individuals from non-qualifying teams qualify for next week’s state meet, which is also at Rancho.

First-year coach Sean Lacow said Barbee, Chavez and Pacheco have a good chance at extending their season to the state meet.

“Jackson, Leo, and Takoda are very strong and determined,” he said. “They’ve improved since the start of the season, and I’m extremely excited to see how they do.”

SOCCER

The battle for the No. 2 seed in the girls’ 3A East came down to Tuesday’s match between Fallon and Lowry.

Fallon suffered a minor setback when it lost to Fernley, 3-0, on Friday but the Wave rebounded with a 6-0 win over Dayton. Both games were on the road.

Going into the final match of the season, Fallon and Lowry were tied at 14-3 and 42 points while Fernley (11-6, 33) and Spring Creek (10-6, 30) were battling for the fourth and final playoff berth. The winner of Fallon’s match receives the No. 2 seed while the loser will be the No. 3 seed.

The regional tournament is next week in Elko.

After Fernley blanked Fallon on Friday, Fallon got back on track.

Natalie Jaques led the team with two goals at distances of 47 and 49 feet, while Jada Anatastio, Kira Johnston, Payton Oceuera and Karlie SImper each scored once.

The Greenwave boys soccer team picked up a key 6-2 win over Dayton on Saturday as the regular season ends this week.

Fallon (6-4-2, 20 points), which traveled to Fernley (4-7-1, 13) on Monday and Lowry (5-5-3, 18) on Tuesday, sat in third in the 3A East before the two matches. The top-four teams, based on total points, advance to next week’s regional tournament in Elko.

Spring Creek leads the East, 36-35 over Elko. In the 3A West, South Tahoe captured the No. 1 seed and North Tahoe is No. 2.

Fallon can finish no higher than third and would face either South Tahoe or North Tahoe in the playoffs. But Fallon could also miss the playoffs with Tuesday’s game against Lowry likely to decide one of the remaining two playoff spots. West Wendover, which is fourth with 19 points, and Lowry had only one match remaining.
