Carson High’s Sawyer Macy, a junior, took second overall out of 173 runners at Saturday’s Flat SAC Invitational in Elverta, Calif., in a time of 15:36.75.

Macy’s time shatters a 15-year-old school record in the 5K set in 2008 by Richard Shroy — 15:58.

It was a blistering meet for the team, too, as sophomore Sean Thornton and junior Alex Miner broke into the school’s top 15 times in the 5K.

Thornton was 24th overall in 16:18.4, which sits eighth in the Carson 5K school record books.

Miner crossed the line in 52nd at 16:58.89, which is the 14th best time in program history.

Sophomore Nate Freed was 61st in 17:17.55 and freshman Quinn Kuchnicki crossed the line in 18:04.71 for 98th.

Mark Walther put together a time of 19:09.85 as the Senators took eighth (230 points) as a team.

Spanish Springs (fifth, 170) and Galena (sixth, 178) were the only Nevada schools to finish in front of Carson. Jesuit won the meet with 54 points.

UP NEXT: Saturday will be the Class 5A North regional meet at Rancho San Rafael in Reno. The Class 5A North boys race is scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m. and will be the final race of the day.

Douglas football takes back The Rivalry trophy

Carson High football left Minden without The Rivalry Trophy on Friday after falling, 35-0, to Douglas.

The Senators were able to hang with the Tigers early, forcing a pair of fumbles, which kept the two squads scoreless until 2:55 remained in the opening half.

Douglas’ Connor Jackson scored twice before the half to give Douglas a 14-0 lead.

Jackson went on to score two more times, tying a Douglas school record for touchdowns in a season with 27.

“They’re good. We knew that coming in. We made mistakes,” said Carson coach Ryan Boshard. “If we would’ve executed the way we needed to execute, we would’ve had a little bit more to say.”

Carson ended the night with around 176 yards of offense with 121 of those coming through the air.

The Senators found a nice connection between quarterback Drake Hardcastle and tight end Justin Moore, putting together three catches for 53 yards. Ethan Hendee snagged four receptions for 56 yards as well.

The Senators also got about 100 additional yards courtesy of Douglas penalties.

“Now we have a home playoff game for the first time in a while,” said Boshard.

When it comes to moving on from Friday night’s loss to Douglas, “Oh, right now. We’re done. We’ve moved on. They’re a great team and they earned that win,” added Boshard postgame.

UP NEXT: Carson (3-7, 2-3 in Class 5A Division III league play) will host No. 5 North Valleys in the first round of the postseason.

It’ll be the second meeting in three weeks after Carson bested NV, 25-24, in OT in Carson.

The winner of that playoff game will travel to No. 1 Douglas the following week.
