CAPS: Go west with a Highland Terrier

Quinn is a gorgeous 10-year-old tuxedo-mix with adorable crossed eyes. Rescued from a dangerous situation, she came to CAPS. She is a bit shy but very sweet. Mostly, Quinn enjoys hanging out in her cat tree or finding tiny places where she can snuggle in and snooze.

Dear readers, I had never met a Westie (West Highland Terrier) until recently when Sophia jumped into my lap. “Oh my gosh, what a cute dog,” I remarked. I am not the only person to think that because famous Westies abound.

A Westie appears on the label of Black and White whisky. They are the ambassadors of Cesar brand dog food. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, had a Westie, and then there is Sophia, who is the queen of visiting dogs.

Sophia is a therapy dog who visits hospitals, cancer centers, senior homes, and homebound folks. She is the perfect companion who settles comfortably wherever she is. Sophia brings her brush when she visits so the lucky person she is visiting can brush her lovely coat.

Originally developed for hunting and ratting, West Highland Terriers are independent and work-oriented. Their high energy is essential in agility, obedience competitions, and search-and-rescue teams.

Westies are versatile and can adapt to many different living situations. Mostly, they are indoor pets who require walks and exercise. They fit seamlessly in families with children, dogs, and cats. However, their strong prey drive excludes small animals like rabbits and gerbils.

Training is easy, because Westies possess superior intelligence and are quick learners. As long as the sessions are fun, positive, and consistent, they enjoy working. Watch out if you are harsh or hurt their feelings, because they will snub you.

According to my friend who trained Sophia, it was easy to introduce her to different people and the more she took her to visit folks the more Sophia desired to go. It was a win-win for everyone involved. She always brightens the day for everybody.

Sophia enjoys the simple pleasures in life like, a squeaky toy, a belly rub, her hair brushed, and food. Fortunately, her happy disposition and love of life make her a popular pal. One touching story about Sophia’s friendship involved a young patient in the hospital who was afraid and crying. Without hesitating, Sophia jumped on her bed and licked her cheek. Instant love and that is how the Westie won.
