Carson High head football coach Ryan Boshard didn’t mince words this weekend after a 40-13 loss to Basic on the road.

The Senators need to get off to quicker starts in the opening quarter.

This coming Saturday will give the Senators (1-2) a chance to do just that as they travel to Reno to take on McQueen (0-3).

The Lancers are coming off a 27-24 loss to Sutter (CA) this past weekend.

“They’re big up front. They are going to be a tough handle for us,” said Boshard. “If we can play some mistake-free football, I think we have a chance.”

Carson and McQueen will kickoff Saturday at 10 a.m.

Senator line will make big impact

After self-inflicted miscues cost Carson early last week, Boshard is hoping his line can settle into a meaningful contest this weekend.

“Our offensive line, if we can get Sam Richetta at center making sure the snaps are good, he’s a good size,” said Boshard. “If we can make sure he’s up to speed, we should be good there.”

Richetta has seen some looks on the defensive side of the rock, but Carson is looking to its offense to make a statement this weekend.

Elsehwere on the line, Roman Gantt is another piece Boshard is expecting to have a big week.

Gantt was deemed the “consummate workhorse”on the offensive line.

“He is the type of player that loves to pull, get into the mix. He’s got a nose for football. He just understands it,” said Boshard of Gantt.

Special teams highlights

While the Senator offense has had some issues getting going early, Carson’s special teams hasn’t been afraid to try and serve as a catalyst.

Jake Weninger has three kickoff returns for touchdowns in as many games so far this season.

He’s been the life on the scoreboard early in games for the Senators.

Of course, he’s just one guy on the field.

The Senators’ ability to block for him and open the gaps on kickoff return has been crucial.

“That’s one thing that I am thoroughly impressed with is our blocking,” said Boshard. “Overall, these kids are intense and stout about staying on their blocks and making sure they do their job. (Weninger) may be the one who gets those stats, but everyone of those kids deserves kudos along with him.”
