After defeating regional runner-up Lowry last month, the Lady Wave volleyball team completed a rare road sweep of the Humboldt and Elko county schools last weekend when Fallon defeated Spring Creek and Elko.
Fallon beat Spring Creek in four games — 25-19, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-23 — Friday before coming from behind to surprise Elko in five — 25-22, 18-25, 15-25, 25-16 and 16-14. The road sweep of Lowry, Spring Creek and Elko in the same season hasn’t happened since 2016 when Fallon finished second behind Truckee in the Northern 3A.
In Fallon’s win over Spring Creek, Reece Hutchings led the team in kills with 10, followed by a trio with seven, Raygen Bartel, Keliah Brady and Hallie Johnson. Kiley Wallace had six kills as the team finished with 39. Johnson led the team in assists with 26 and Vernita Fillmore had 12. From the service line, six players each had an ace with Kaitlyn Hoffman leading the team with two.
Wallace led the team in digs with 11, Hutchings added seven and Layla Walker had five. Wallace also led in blocks with 10 while Hoffman, Hutchings and Johnson each had three.
In the five-game win over Elko, Fallon’s second five-game win this season, Hutchings led the team in kills with 12 and Wallace had 11 as the team finished with 43. Bartel added eight kills and Brady had six. Johnson, Fillmore and Brady combined for 74 assists with Johnson leading with 40 and Fillmore added 30. After the team posted seven aces the day before, Fallon managed only three with Fillmore recording two and Bartel having one.
Bailey Stritenberg led the team in digs with nine, Bartel had six and Wallace finished with four. Wallace also led the team in blocks with nine, Hoffman had six and Johnson added five.
SOCCER
The Lady Wave soccer team won its first two games of the season before falling to Elko in its home opener.
Fallon defeated West Wendover, 10-0, on Sept. 1 and then White Pine, 6-0, on Sept. 2. Fallon, though, lost to Elko, 4-1, on Friday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
In the win over White Pine, Yasmien Laceste led the team in goals with two, and Kourtnie Simper, Sofia Basurto, Madison Lewis and Jazelyn Kratz each had one. Jada Anatastio led the team in assists with three, and Kira Johnston, Kaitlin Goings and Karlie Simper each had one.
The Fallon boys soccer team won its first game of the season on Sept. 2 when it took down White Pine, 4-0, after tying its league opener the day before to West Wendover, 2-2. Fallon, though, fell to Elko, 4-0, on Friday and Spring Creek, 4-0, on Saturday.
No individual statistics were available.
The Greenwave returns to action on Friday in Fernley for a 4:45 p.m. tilt before traveling to Dayton on Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
GIRLS GOLF
The Lady Wave golf team opened its season last week with a pair of tournaments in Elko County.
Fallon finished sixth of seven teams at Spring Creek last Wednesday with a score of 490 as Wooster won the tournament with 452.
Charissa Chenoweth led the team with a score of 105 followed by Hannah Benjamin at 109. Megan Johnson finished with a 128 and Riley Nonamer carded a 148.
In Elko on the next day at the Ruby View Golf Course, Fallon finished last with a score of 489.
Benjamin and Chenoweth tied for the team lead with a score of 109, followed by Johnson with a 127 and Nonamer at 144.
South Tahoe won the event with a 407, and Truckee and North Valleys did not compete in both tournaments.
CROSS COUNTRY
Fallon’s cross country team competed in the Fast Fernley 4k on Sept. 1 and the North Tahoe Kiwanis Mountain Motivational Invitational last Friday.
In the Fernley race, Takedo Pacheco, Leorjo Chavez and Jackson Barbee finished sixth through eighth. Pacheco ran the course in 16 minutes, 19 seconds, followed by Chavez in 16:22 and Barbee in 16:35. Alexander Sorensen finished in 19:44. For the girls, Abigail Lacow finished 11th in 23:02.
Barbee led the varsity boys at North Tahoe with a time of 26:59 followed by Pacheco with a time of 27:54. Lacow led the varsity girls with a time of 42:34.
