After a rough start to the 2A league season, the Lady Bighorns volleyball team picked up its first home win of the year.
In the middle of a three-match schedule last week, Oasis Academy defeated Battle Mountain in five games on Friday – 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 14-25 and 15-3 – at the city-county gym.
Grace Laca and Shelbi Bracken tied for the team high in kills with four, and Alyssa Ayers had three. Kaitlyn Guthrie and Kirsten Detamosi each had two kills, and Madison Darst and Dahlila Creer each had one.
Ayers led the team in aces with three, and Guthrie, Bracken, Darst and Creer each had two. Ayers, Darst, Bracken and Laca each had a solo block, and Laca led the team in digs with two. Ayers dished a team-high nine assists and Darst had seven.
The first match of the week saw Yerington, one of the favorites to win the 2A, come out on top, 25-7, 25-19 and 25-8 last Wednesday in Lyon County.
Laca led the team in kills with four, blocks with one and digs with one. Darst had four assists.
West Wendover quickly ended Oasis Academy’s momentum after its first league win by upending the Bighorns, 22-25, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-10 on Saturday in Fallon.
Laca led the team in kills with six, Guthrie and Bracken each had three, and Darst and Creer added two apiece. Laca, Guthrie and Ayers each had an ace, Laca had two solo blocks and four digs, and Bracken also had a pair of digs. Ayers led the team in assists with eight and Darst had six.
The team next competes on Tuesday at Coral Academy and Wednesday at home against Incline.
GIRLS GOLF
Earlier this month, the Oasis Academy girls golf team opened the season at the Tahoe City Golf Course.
Oliva Kutansky finished fourth and Meirra Cavanaugh took eighth.
The Lady Bighorns next compete at Empire Ranch in Carson City on Monday.
CROSS COUNTRY
Oasis Academy’s cross country team competed at the North Tahoe Kiwanis Mountain Motivational Invitational last Friday.
In the sophomore boys division, Hunter Adams finished fourth to lead the school with a time of 24:14 followed by Kayden White, 27:03; Jay Frederick, 27:18; and Chase Ackerman, 27:41. In the freshman boys division, Leonidas Arcoraci finished the race in 27:28. In the frosh/soph girls division, Kayla Greenberg ran the course in 34:39.
The team next competes today at the Fernley Road Invitational and then at Galena on Tuesday.
