The Nevada Appeal’s newsroom and production team won 16 awards in the 2023 Nevada Press Association awards announced last week.

The newspaper, celebrating its 159th year of serving Carson City, won the advertising general excellence award. The paper was second in the general excellence category after a first-place finish last year. The paper’s website, nevadaappeal.com, was second in the general online excellence category. The paper’s editorial page was named second in the rural newspaper category.

Reporter Scott Neuffer took first-place in news enterprise reporting category for his coverage of cycling in the state capital. Neuffer also placed first in the enterprise feature story category for his coverage of Ricardo Romero celebrating 60 years as a Carson City barber. Neuffer claimed his third first-place award for his coverage of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office body camera program in the political-government-enterprise reporting category.

Neuffer also took second place in the coverage of underserved communities for his series about suicides in Carson City.

“In depth coverage and a difficult subject that isn’t often covered in newsprint,” the judge said about the coverage.

Graphic artist Mike McGarvey placed first in the best digital advertisement category. McGarvey also took second place in the print advertisement half-page or larger category.

Freelance photographer Jeff Mulvihill, Jr. was awarded first-place in the sports photo category.

Reporter Jessica Garcia took second-place for her coverage of the Mound House community center in the explanatory journalism category. Garcia also took third-place for Community Service, for her coverage of human trafficking in Northern Nevada.

“Very interesting subject. For some reason it seems to be a touchy subject that no one is willing to address. Great job,” the judge said.

Arts reporter and page designer Kyler Klix took home second-place in the entertainment feature story category for his feature on Brother Dan.

Klix and fellow page designer Lauren Solinger placed third for the Appeal in the page one design/cover design category. The page designers swept the category with sister papers The Record-Courier taking first place and the Lahontan Valley News placing second.

Sports director Carter Eckl took third-place in the sports feature category for his coverage of Jim de Arrieta, the Carson High School football team’s kicking coach who has been coaching for more than 40 years. Eckl took home two more awards for his coverage of the Douglas Tigers that appeared in The Record-Courier.

In all, the Nevada News Group publications, the Appeal, The Record-Courier and the Lahontan Valley News took home more than 40 awards in the competition. The production headquarters for the publications is the Carson City-based office.
