Oasis sports: Bighorn teams drop their first series of season

Both the Oasis Academy baseball and softball teams lost their first series of the season at the hands of Yerington last week.

The Bighorns’ baseball team fell to Yerington in the first two games, 4-3 and 10-0, before winning the final game, 4-3.

Oasis Academy (11-3, 2A North) takes on Pershing County on Thursday at the Reno Aces’ stadium to begin a three-game series. Both teams play a doubleheader on Saturday in Lovelock.

In last Tuesday’s series-opening loss, Oasis Academy led 3-2 before Yerington tied the game in the third. The Lions won the game in the final at-bat with a two-out double in the seventh.

Sophomore Kayden White led the team with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Senior Benjamin Utz, juniors Zachary Budner and Josh Gusewelle, and sophomores James Thibodaux and Trevor Barrenchea each had a hit. Utz and Thibodaux also drove in a run.

Sophomores Ryder McNabb and Matthew Bird each threw two innings with McNabb allowing seven hits and two unearned runs. Bird allowed an earned run while striking out two. Budner pitched the final 2.2 innings, yielding an unearned run in the final inning.

The Lions took Saturday’s doubleheader opener, 10-0, in Fallon, scoring seven runs in the first two innings.

The Bighorns collected only three hits with Budner picking up two singles and junior Fenn Mackedon singling once.

Mackedon allowed five earned runs and nine hits over the first two innings before White pitched the final three, allowing three earned runs.

After watching the Lions tie the game in the final inning, the Bighorns returned the favor from Game 1 by winning the finale in the last at-bat.

After McNabb and Bird singled with one out in the seventh, Budner reached base on catcher’s interference to load the bases. Mackedon singled off the second pitch to center to drive in McNabb to win the game.

Mackedon and Bird each had three hits, and Budner and McNabb collected two apiece. White led the team with two RBIs, and Mackedon and Budner each drove in one.

McNabb pitched 6.1 innings, allowing only an earned run while striking out three. Budner pitched the last two outs to get out of the team out of a jam.


SOFTBALL

The Bighorns lost their first game of the year on Tuesday with Yerington winning 15-7 in Lyon County. The Lions won Saturday’s first game, 11-6, in Fallon before the Bighorns came back for a 10-8 victory in the finale.

Oasis Academy (13-2, 9-2 2A North) hosted Pershing County on Tuesday and travels to Lovelock on Saturday for a doubleheader.

Yerington jumped out to an 11-2 lead after four innings in the first game before Oasis Academy cut the deficit to 12-7 in the sixth.

Junior Kaylin Guthrie led the team with two hits as the Bighorns collected only four hits. Guthrie also had an RBI, freshman Caidance McCart singled and freshman Phynex Hunt doubled and drove in two.

Junior Kirsten Detomasi pitched four innings, allowing seven earned runs and six hits while striking out four. Junior Taylynn Maynez pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs.

In Saturday’s first game, the Bighorns tied the game in the sixth and held on for extra innings, but the Lions scored five in the eighth to win.

A walk, hit-by-pitch and single loaded the bases with no outs in the eight before Yerington broke the tie with a two-run double. With two outs, the Lions singled in a run and two more scored on relay throws to seal the win.

Maynez led the team at the plate with two hits and an RBI, and Hunt and senior Eneyde Rios each singled in two runs. Senior Mackenzie Bryant, juniors Lorena Rios and Detomasi, sophomore Dahlilia Creer and freshman Emma Lewis each singled.

Detomasi went the distance in the circle, striking out nine while allowing nine earned runs on seven hits.

In the series finale, Oasis Academy broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the third inning and never trailed.

Detomasi singled, tripled and drove in a run while Guthrie singled twice and had an RBI. Creer singled and drove in two, Hunt doubled and drove in one and Rio singled and had an RBI. Lewis singled and Maynez had an RBI.

Detomasi struck out 11 and gave up five earned runs over seven hits.
