Oasis roundup: Baseball wins under lights in Reno

Playing under the lights at the home of the Reno Aces, the Oasis Academy baseball team won its series opener against Pershing County in the final at-bat.

After the 8-7 win on Thursday in Reno, the Bighorns swept the Mustangs, 13-1 and 25-8, on Saturday in Lovelock to stay in second in the Northern 2A.

Oasis Academy improved to 14-3 in the Northern 2A and sits in second behind West Wendover (14-1) with a series this week against North Tahoe (4-8).

The Bighorns were down 6-1 going into the fifth inning before taking the lead in the sixth. After watching the Mustangs tie the game in the seventh, Oasis Academy reached base on two walks in the bottom half with Fenn Mackedon and Josh Gusewelle on first and second with one out.

After a pitching change, James Thibodaux singled on the second pitch to right field, scoring Mackedon from second to win the game.

Down 6-1 in the fifth, Trevor Barrenchea singled in Michael Casey and then scored on Ryder McNabb’s groundout to trim the deficit to three (6-3). Mackedon’s two-out single to right scored Z Budner and Matthew Bird.

McNabb’s two-out triple to center scored Kayden White and AlexZander Sheldon-Davis, giving the Bighorns their first lead of the game, 7-6.

Budner took the win, pitching the last two innings. McNabb and Bird each threw two innings and Mackedon pitched one. Only one of the seven runs was earned.

Saturday’s doubleheader didn’t have any game-ending drama as the Bighorns’ offense scored 38 runs.

Mackedon hit two home runs in the third and fifth innings of the first game after Oasis Academy scored five in the first inning on Bird’s groundout, Zachary Budner and Thibodaux’s singles and Gusewelle’s double. White singled in two in the third and followed with a two-run double in the fifth. McNabb singled in two runs.

Bird picked up the win, striking out six and giving up seven hits.

In the series finale, McNabb led the team with five hits, including a pair of doubles, as the Bighorns came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie it at four in the fourth. Oasis Academy scored 10 runs in the fifth and nine in the seventh.

White homered, Budner tripled, and Bird and Mackedon each doubled in the route. Bird, McNabb and Mackedon each drove in three runs, and White, Budner and Utz each had two RBIs.

McNabb recorded the win, going 4.1 innings and giving up one earned run while striking out four. Barrenchea pitched 1.2 innings and Mackedon threw one inning.


GIRLS LACROSSE

The Bighorns girls lacrosse team notched a pair of wins against 5A schools last week.

Oasis Academy defeated Spanish Springs, 14-13, in double overtime last Monday in Sparks and followed up with a 13-7 win over Reno on Wednesday.

In the double-overtime win, freshman Hazel Mackedon scored the game-winning goal as she tied with the team lead of six goals with freshman Kaylee Craig. Both freshmen also had an assist and Craig won 83 percent of the draws against Spanish Springs.

Freshman Lakota Casey scored twice, and freshman Abigail Lacow and junior Lacee Stoddard each had two assists. Freshman goalie Emily Dunkin had eight saves.

In the win over the Huskies, Craig led the team with six goals and won 19 of 23 draws. Mackedon added four goals and an assist, and Stoddard had two goals and three assists. Casey scored once, Ella Bassham had an assist and Dunkin finished with 10 saves.


SOFTBALL

After starting the season perfect, the Bighorns softball team dropped its second series in a row.

League-leading Pershing County (16-0) swept last week’s series, winning the first game on Tuesday in Fallon, 10-1, before sweeping Oasis Academy, 8-6 and 6-5, on Saturday in Lovelock.

Oasis Academy (8-5) dropped to third in the standings behind Yerington (11-4) and it takes on winless North Tahoe this week.

The Mustangs scored the game’s first five runs in the series opener as Taylor Garland pitched a no-hitter, striking out 18 while walking two.

Kirsten Detamosi struck out eight in a complete-game effort, allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

The offense came alive in Saturday’s doubleheader.

Down 6-2, Phoenix Hunt scored on Caidance McCart’s walk before Eneyde Rios stole home to cut the deficit to one run. Emma Lewis’ line drive to right scored McCart to tie the game.

The first three Mustangs reached base in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of doubles and a single to take the lead.

Oasis Academy went down in order to end the game.

Taylynn Maynez led the team with two hits while Lewis had a team-high two RBIs.

Detomasi took the loss, striking out eight but allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs.

The series finale ended in the final at-bat after Oasis Academy jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Lorena Rios doubled in Hunt and Eneyde Rios to start the scoring in the second inning. Lewis’ two-run single scored Lorena Rios and Kaylin Guthrie.

The Mustangs scored twice in the fifth inning on a groundout before tying the game in the seventh on a pair of two-out steals at home, sending the game into extra innings.

Maynez led off the eighth with a double but was stranded.

Pershing County won the game with a two-out line-drive single to center in the ninth.

Detomasi took the loss, giving up three earned runs while striking out eight. She gave up seven hits.
