Oasis roundup: Bighorns’ sweep sets up battle for 2A title

First place is on the line this weekend for the Oasis Academy baseball team.

In its first year of postseason eligibility, the Bighorns swept North Tahoe last week, setting the stage when No. 1 West Wendover visits Fallon for a three-game series.

Oasis Academy (17-3) needs to sweep West Wendover (17-1) to take over first in the 2A North. Yerington (13-5) and Incline (11-6) are close behind for the No. 2 seed. The Bighorns end the season next week against Silver Stage.

After blowing out North Tahoe in the first two games of the series, 15-2 at North Tahoe on Tuesday and 11-1 in Saturday’s first game in Fallon, Oasis held off the Lakers, 4-3, in the finale.

The Bighorns didn’t lead until the final at-bat as North Tahoe built a 2-0 in the third before going up 3-1 in the fifth. Oasis tied the game in the fifth before winning it in the seventh.

Kayden White singled in the final inning and then stole second. A passed ball allowed him to reach third but the catcher’s throw went into the outfield as White scored the winning run.

Ryder McNabb started the game, going five innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four. White pitched the last two innings to record the win.

Trevor Barrenchea and Michael Casey each doubled, and Zachary Budner and White each singled.

In the series-opening win, Oasis Academy scored in every inning of the six-inning game.

McNabb led the team with four RBIs on a single and triple, and Joshua Gusewelle doubled twice and singled, driving in three. AlexZander Sheldon-Davis, Fenn Mackedon and White each had an RBI. Matthew Bird and Mackedon each doubled, and Budner finished with two doubles.

Budner pitched a complete game, striking out six.

Budner also homered and drove in two runs in Saturday’s first game, and Bird doubled twice and had two RBIs. McNabb singled twice and drove in one, while Michael Casey and Gusewelle each had two singles.

Mackedon pitched four innings, striking out six while giving up three hits and two walks, and James Thibodaux struck out two in two scoreless innings.


SOFTBALL

The Bighorns snapped out of a funk, losing five of their last six games, by sweeping North Tahoe last week.

Oasis won Tuesday’s game, 17-0, at the lake before winning 17-2 and 20-2 on Saturday in Fallon.

The Bighorns improved to 12-5 and sit in third place, trailing Yerington (14-4) by 1.5 games. Pershing County leads the 2A North at 18-0.

Kirsten Detomasi hit a grand slam in Tuesday’s game and Phynex Hunt and Adelyne Flick each had three RBIs. Haley Bowman collected two RBIs, and Taylynn Maynex, Lorena Rios, Dahlila Creer and Mackenzie Bryant each had an RBI.

Maynez struck out three in two innings and Detomasi struck out the side in her only inning of work.

Saturday’s first game featured every Bighorn recording an RBI with Lorena and Eneyde Rios each driving in three on two singles. Maynez and Creer each had two RBIs with Creer also picking up a double. Caidance McCart, Emma Lewis, Flick, Bryant and Bowman each had an RBI.

Maynez struck out six in three innings.

Most of the final game’s runs were unearned as the Bighorns had only five RBIs recorded.

Kaylin Guthrie singled and brought in two runners, while Bryant, Bowman, Lewis and McCart each had an RBI. Bowman led the team with two hits.

Maynez pitched all three innings, giving up six hits while striking out two.
