Faith & Insight: Some ‘end times’ directives

It is clear from scripture that we live in the “last days” or, as some say, “the end times” (see Acts 2:17, 2Timothy 3:1, Hebrews1:2, 2Peter3:3). The reality that we live in the “last days” should not cause us to live in fear, but live in the practical directives that the Bible clearly gives.

The Apostle Peter is one who speaks clearly to us in his first letter:

“But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious (clear-minded) and watchful (self-controlled) in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another (love each other deeply), for love will cover a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God — 1Peter 4:7-10”

I see four things addressed in these verses:

• Prayer: It’s not just prayer, though; notice that he speaks to an attitude and mindset – “be serious, clear minded, watchful and sober” – so that we will be able to pray, effectively.

• Love for one another: This should go without saying because of Jesus’ command to us, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another” (John 13:34), but Peter strongly reminds us by saying, “above all things have fervent love for one another.”

• Hospitality: “Be hospitable to one another” – open your home and your life to others, in Jesus name, and share what he has done in your life with others.

• Ministry: Each of us has received, God has given every one of us ministry capability – we are to minister what God has given us in order to be good stewards of the precious grace of God in our lives.

What should be characteristic of our lives in the days in which we live? God directs us to be people of sound-minded prayer, fervent love, overflowing hospitality and Holy Spirit gifted ministry. Let’s live it out and see his kingdom advanced and glory brought to His wonderful Name!
