Mile High Jazz Band Association presents Carson City’s 21st annual Jazz & Beyond Music Festival, with 11 days of free entertainment featuring 30 performances.
The festival begins with the festival opener on Friday, Aug. 16, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Governor’s Mansion.
It opens with the Garnervillains guitars and vocals, and features the renowned big band, the Reno Jazz Orchestra. Beverage bar and food truck will be on site; firearms are prohibited.
This year, an afternoon at the historic Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson River Road, along the Carson River, will be on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Visitors can wear their boots and hats and enjoy the music of Dale Poune and Doug Sandall, cowboy poetry by Larry Marinel and Johanna Foster, and the Sagebrush Rebels country band. Mule-drawn wagon rides by Hee Haw Haven Mules will provide tours through the ranchland. Seating is limited, bring chairs. Food, beverages, and Scoups ice cream treats will be available. This annual event is sponsored in part by the Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department; Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch; Great Basin Consulting Group, and the Music Performance Trust Fund.
A festival favorite is a Basie's Birthday tribute concert by the Mile High Jazz Band with vocalists Jakki Ford and June Joplin from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the McFadden Plaza stage. This date is the 120th anniversary of the birth of the great band-leader, William “Count” Basie.
Other festival performers include the 9-piece Direct Message Jazz, CeCe Gable and Bill Hecht Trio, New World Jazz Project, Graham Marshall Band, Monique De Haviland Band, Cherie & John and Take This, the Reno Video Game Symphony Jazz Ensemble, RoseBud’s Dance Band, Lucky Diamond and the Incontinentals, Gary Lynn Floyd and Friends, Impromptu, and lots more.
